LAPD & DEA Ongoing Investigation Around Matthew Perry’s Death

While the beloved Friends actor, Matthew Perry, passed away nearly seven months ago, he is still on many fans’ minds. Not only is the world heartbroken to see a talented person leave this world, but his death was unexpected leaving a hole for many people. Although the autopsy shows the death was due to a fatal ketamine overdose, there is still an ongoing investigation by LAPD and DEA surrounding Matthew’s death.

Details Of Matthew Perry’s Death

On October 28, 2023, Friends fans got an unpleasant announcement that longtime star, Matthew Perry, had unexpectedly passed away. Later, in December 2023, the autopsy gave confirmation his death was drug-related. Although he was taking ketamine infusion therapy, his autopsy shows the cause of death was the acute effects of ketamine from a different source. Sadly, a year before his passing, Matthew had become very public about his addiction difficulties.

During the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing he admits to struggling through many issues. At that time, he interviewed with People, “I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side again.” Vulnerably, he opens up saying, “I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober—and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction—to write it all down. I was pretty certain that it would help people if I did.”

Matthew Perry Had Several Contributing Factors To His Death

Reportedly, other factors surrounding Matthew Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects. Buprenorphine is a medical prescription for disorders with opioid use. With the coroner’s examination, his death was ruled as accidental. After the report was released in December, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner considered the investigation into his death closed. However, there is currently an open investigation with the California branch of the Drug Enforcement Administration which is working with the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD And DEA Continue To Seek Information

Both the LAPD and DEA are continuing to follow leads in conjunction with the passing of Matthew Perry. Not only that, but they are in communication with the U.S. Postal Inspector. Their main questions are who provided the ketamine, why, and what were the circumstances around it. According to TMZ, the source of Matthew’s ketamine was at one point a delivery through the USPS. Recently, the agencies have been working closely to find the source of the ketamine operation that led to Matthew’s death. An insider told People, the investigation was opened in December following the coroner’s report.

There is speculation that the two agencies are intending to prosecute the supplier when located. However, it is unclear if it is for solely the provision of illegal substances or if it will also include charges for contributing to the death of Matthew Perry. Additionally, they have interviewed several key people in Hollywood, but names are privatized at this time. Reportedly, many of the discussions are with people who knowingly have a history of drug use or abuse. Furthermore, when the DEA was contacted on Tuesday, but they declined to comment. Instead, they directed all questions to the LAPD for updates or to provide additional information on the case.
