Friends star Matthew Perry is an open book- literally. The actor has written a book based on his time in Hollywood and his struggles with addiction. In the memoir, he is sharing a bunch of secrets from his time on the hit series which ran from 1994 to 2004. Though the cast reunited last year, there was still a lot left unsaid. Yet, he covers it all in his memoir, Friends, Lovers & The Big Terrible Thing. Here is just some of what was unleashed by Perry in the book out on Tuesday, November 1st.

Matthew Perry’s Addiction Is Clear On The Show

There was a time when Perry, who played the goofy but lovable Chandler Bing, started to look drastically different. He got very thin and it was almost scary. According to Us Weekly, by rewatching Friends, it is easy to see when his addiction started to take over. In his book, Matthew writes that in Season 3, he was visibly very thin. It was due to the opioids he was taking. During his time on the series, he shared that his weight would go from 128 to 225 pounds.

“You can track the trajectory of my addiction if you gauge my weight from season to season—when I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills,” he wrote in his memoir. Perry, now 53, added that all of his co-stars rallied around him. However, it was Jennifer Aniston (Rachel Green) who first confronted him about his drinking. He was shocked that she even noticed but she said that everyone could smell it though she was sweet in her ways.

Sadly, throughout the show’s ten-season run, Matthew was only sober for one season. That would be Season 9 after two rehab stints in 1997 and 2001.”Friends was a juggernaut, too, and I didn’t have to worry about f–king that up — I was clean, and I was about to have my season, the one where everyone was talking about Chandler,” Perry wrote. Therefore, that singular season was the one where he was sober.

Time To Say Goodbye

Matthew Perry reveals that it was Jennifer Aniston who was the one who cut the cord to Friends first. “Jennifer Aniston had decided that she didn’t want to do the show anymore, and as we all made decisions as a group, that meant we all had to stop,” Perry shared. The cast did see that their characters were ready to move on though maybe not Matthew so much. Ultimately, due to Aniston’s desire to leave, the final season was shorter. Now, through the book, hopefully, Matthew can find some peace in his past. Plus, fans can further understand what he went through during his time as the iconic Chandler.
