General Hospital fans saw an unfamiliar face playing a familiar character on the episode airing Wednesday, December 27. Why are fans upset about the decision? Keep reading for all the details.

Kirsten Storms Health Issues Reason For Recast?

Actress Nicole Paggi unexpectedly took over the role of Maxie Jones this week. The cast change came just a week after Eden McCoy was also temporarily replaced following her mother’s tragic death.

Kirsten Storms has been playing the daughter of beloved characters Frisco and Felicia since 2005. However, this isn’t the first time she’s been temporarily replaced on GH.

In 2011, Jen Lilley stepped into the role for almost a year. Lilley later joined Days of Our Lives as Theresa.

Another DOOL alum, Molly Burnett, took over as Maxie twice when Kirsten Storms was on leave, once in 2016 and again in 2018.

Kirsten Storms has been open about her health struggles, including her battle with endometriosis. The exact reason for the temporary recast wasn’t revealed.

But fans didn’t have to wait long to see Kirsten Storms back on screen as Maxie. She returned to the soap on the very next episode.

General Hospital Fans Slam Decision To Recast Maxie

Soap fans are not happy about the temporary recasting of Maxie. While they understand the actress’s health struggles, they think GH overuses temp recasts.

One fan took to Twitter to vent about it. “I’ll never understand the #GH obsession with temporary recasts…it would make so much more sense imho to send Maxie to TX to visit family or have Joss head to Australia to visit her Dad & grandparents.”

Sending Maxie to Texas is exactly what the show did in 2021 when Kirsten Storms had emergency brain surgery.

The tweet earned many replies in agreement. Several people explained that recasting is necessary for unplanned absences because the scripts are written in advance.

While that may be true, one fan didn’t think Maxie was needed in the scenes in question. “KS is on tomorrow (so just one day), but I’ll agree they could have just taken her out of that scene…she wasn’t necessary,” they said.

Joss and Maxie aren’t the only characters temporarily recast. Kelly Monaco, who plays Sam, was briefly replaced by Lindsey Hartley.

Do you think General Hospital sometimes temporarily recasts when it’s not necessary? Sound off in the comments.

Don’t miss ABC’s primetime tribute to the daytime susder. General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling airs on Thursday, January 4, at 10 PM Eastern after the Golden Wedding special.
