‘Gilmore Girls’: Why Milo Ventimiglia’s Spin-Off Never Happened
Gilmore Girls‘ Milo Ventimiglia was supposed to get a spinoff, but it never happened. Finally, fans are getting the update on why they never saw it.
Gilmore Girls Smell Snow
Gilmore Girls is a very popular TV series that aired in the early 2000s but is still loved and watched by fans today. Being described by fans as the perfect fall TV series, the show has been rewatched time and time again. Thus, this popularity is the reason the series has secured its place on the Netflix streaming platform for so long. The series even got a sequel spin-off Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life.
The series follows Lorelai and her daughter Rory Gilmore. After getting pregnant at 16 and running away from the rich world she hated growing up, Lorelai gets a job at a hotel working as a maid and takes care of her daughter Rory on her own.
Furthermore, Rory has big dreams of going to Harvard University. When Rory finally gets into the boarding school that could pave the way to her success and dreams, Lorelai can’t afford it and does the unthinkable, asking her parents for help. In exchange for their checks, Emily and Richard force the girls to attend Friday night dinner at their house every week.
Known for the romance, drama, chaos, and arguments, the series will have fans hypnotized and wishing they could erase their memories to start it all over again. The series is also known for the battle of which guys the Gilmore girls should end up with.
‘Why Did You Drop Out Of Yale?’
Rory’s romances are part of what makes Gilmore Girls so interesting. Three main boys have taken over the internet as fans pick their teams. These are Dean, Jess, and Logan.
Most of the internet is split between Jess and Logan as most believe that Dean is a bad person who does not respect women’s rights. Additionally, (SPOILER ALERT) Dean cheats on his wife with Rory.
Maybe it is just his bad-boy aesthetic or because it’s an “I hate everyone but you” trope, but many people love Jess and are willing to take him if Rory doesn’t want him. This is why his “Why did you drop out of Yale?” scene will go down in history.
However, before this happens Jess goes to California after getting into an argument with his Uncle, Luke to get to know his father and have a place to crash. In doing so, he leaves Rory behind. He does not say goodbye and the way the series left things seemed like they were going to have a whole storyline in California.
Regardless, there was no storyline for Jess in California or in a spin-off which fans were rumored to get. There was no storyline for Jess at all. He seemed to disappear, leaving Rory to pick up the pieces and move on.
Why Fans Didn’t Get More Jess
Fans were indeed supposed to get more Jess. This would seemingly be very successful considering how much people loved him. However, Jess Mariano never got his star role spin-off set in Venice, California. Furthermore, it seemed as though the series got a pilot episode with Season 3 “Here Comes the Son” episode of Gilmore Girls.
The writer of Gilmore Girls and consulting producer who joined the series in Season 5, Stan Zimmerman, even noted that there was interest in the spin-off. Additionally, the creator of the series, Amy Sherman Palladino had a house in Venice and liked the area.
Zimmerman noted, “We hung out there a lot.” Also, he added, “We’d go have crazy lunches. [Sherman-Palladino] loved Venice … It’s a very colorful part of L.A.” Additionally, he noted that the creator thought the contrast between beachy California and the peaceful small town of Connecticut was a fascinating juxtaposition.
Zimmerman revealed in his interview with PEOPLE that the spin-off was not “picked up for a full-season run.” In addition, Zimmerman even discussed the teams for which guy Rory should be with during his interview.
The Popular Gilmore Girls Debate
The writer disclosed, “Everyone’s just so fascinated by what team you’re on. I obviously have loyalty to Team Logan, because I was there [when Czuchry was cast].” Then, he added, “It’s just fun to see people pick apart, and I can see why you would like Jess.”
