For decades, Jeffrey Dahmer’s horrific story has haunted the citizens of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Although many true crime enthusiasts are familiar with his crimes, many grew familiar with the story after Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story premiered on Netflix.

Thankfully, police eventually apprehended Dahmer for his crimes and he went to prison. But how did the police capture him? And what happened to him after his incarceration began?

Keep reading to get the scoop.

Jeffrey Dahmer’s Despicable Crimes Intrigued Netflix Subscribers

Many Netflix subscribers have heard of the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer before. However, not everyone realized the extent of his brutal crimes. Monster dug deep into the horrifying story and shone a light on the victims who lost their lives at Dahmer’s hands.

The limited series features Dahmer’s crimes from start to finish, ranging from 1978-1991. Today, authorities know he raped, murdered, and destroyed the remains of at least 17 people. Sadly, that’s not where the horror ends. Dahmer also occasionally ate part of his victims’ bodies, as well as participated in necrophilia.

American Horror Story alum Evan Peters played Dahmer in the series. He even won a Golden Globe for his performance, which greatly upset the families of the real Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims.

“There’s a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame,” the mother of victim Tony Hughes told TMZ.

Many of the victims’ families protested the series, prompting others to do the same. People felt the families suffered enough and that a new dramatization of the case was incredibly inappropriate.

The Killer Went To Prison And Met His Demise

Although nothing can completely erase the pain and anguish the victims’ families feel, many are relieved to know that Jeffrey Dahmer was imprisoned for his crimes and is no longer living.

In the summer of 1991, Dahmer lured a man named Tracy Edwards back to his apartment. Dahmer handcuffed Tracy and told him he planned to eat his heart. Fortunately, Tracy punched Dahmer and managed to escape. He went straight to the police and led them back to Dahmer’s apartment where they uncovered photographs of dismembered body parts.

The case eventually went to trial and Dahmer was sentenced to serve 16 life terms in prison in 1992. However, his stay in prison was short-lived. Another inmate beat Dahmer to death with a metal bar in the fall of 1994, when Dahmer was 34 years old.
