Gillian Anderson hinted at wanting to be involved in Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot. She said that she wouldn’t say no if asked to reprise her role as Special Agent Dana Scully. Keep reading to see what other hints she dropped about the series.

Gillian Anderson Almost Didn’t Play Agent Scully

The X-Files star appeared as a guest on Wednesday’s episode of Today. She spoke with Savannah Guthrie about the possibility of being in the proposed series.

“It’s so funny because for most of my life, since I have finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen, not going to happen,’” Gillian, 55, told Savannah. “Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”

Special Agent Dana Scully is easily one of Gillian Anderson’s most popular roles. As mentioned above, she’s often asked about it even though the original series ended in 2002.

It may come as a surprise to X-Files fans to find out that the creator, Chris Carter, didn’t initially want Gillian for the role. Actually, the network wanted more of a “bombshell” character and were pushing for Pamela Anderson to play the role of Agent Scully.

Will Mulder & Scully Be In The X-Files Reboot?

While an X-Files reboot hasn’t been confirmed, Gillian Anderson called Ryan Coogler “a bit of a genius.” She believes that a reboot is definitely a possibility. However, when asked if she would appear in the series, she played it cool.

“Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing,” she said. “I’m not saying no.” At the same time, she hasn’t been approached for any potential role at this time either. Then again, Coogler hasn’t made any moves to start production or casting on the project.

“I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well,” the X-Files alum added. “And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”

In addition to having Gillian’s stamp of approval, Ryan Coogler has also sat down with the original X-Files creator Chris Carter. Coogler shared some of his ideas with Carter and he said, “I just asked him what his ideas were, and he told me, and I said, ‘Those sound like good ideas.’”

It wouldn’t be the first time Gillian Anderson reprised her role of Special Agent Scully if she does appear in the rumored series. She appeared alongside her FBI partner Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny, in a two-season revival of the show from 2016 to 2018. The pair also appeared in two movie spinoffs from the series: The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008).

For those wanting a taste of nostalgic Scully and Mulder, you can stream The X-Files on Prime Video.
