Dixie D’Amelio, the popular social media personality, and star of Hulu’s The D’Amelio Show, has given viewers an honest glimpse into her life with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Dixie describes the extreme symptoms that she grapples with every month during the show’s two-episode premiere on September 20, 2023. “Basically, extreme anxiety, depression, losing the will to live, and a lot of irritability and anger,” Dixie shared.

Dixie D’Amelio opened up on Instagram when she shared her initial PMDD diagnosis

Her initial public disclosure about her PMDD came in October 2022 via an Instagram Live session. At the time, she was unsure about why she was feeling unwell. Dixie stated, “I wasn’t feeling great and not really sure why. I recently got diagnosed with this thing called PMDD, which is premenstrual dysphoric disorder.”

This condition deeply affects one’s moods and behaviors. Dixie’s willingness to speak out helps destigmatize discussions about mental health.

Living with PMDD isn’t a straightforward journey, and Dixie admitted that it sometimes leads her to a “very dark place” mentally.

She also recognized that it’s an ongoing battle and that being able to talk about it helps. “I talked to my dad last night … he understands he doesn’t need to fix everything, but I just want him there for me and he can do that and so can my mom,” DIxie shared.

Dixie’s PMDD is a topic of conversation in The D’Amelio Show

On The D’Amelio Show, Dixie shared more about how PMDD affects her, explaining her struggle with severe PMS leading up to her menstrual cycle. She emphasized, “People are going to be like, ‘Oh my god, everyone gets that,’ but I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to want to die every month before you got your period.”

Dixie’s straightforward explanation challenges the common misconceptions surrounding PMDD.

Dixie also revealed that PMDD casts a shadow over every single aspect of her life, including her relationship with her younger sister, Charli D’Amelio. Tensions between the sisters were on display during the first episodes of Season 2 of The D’Amelio Show.

Dixie explained that Charli wasn’t around when she received her diagnosis. She noted, “I never really explained it to her.”

Charli agreed, “I’ve done my own research on PMDD to kind of understand, at least, a little bit, but she’s never really explained it to me.” This lack of communication had an impact on their relationship.

In addition, Dixie took the opportunity to discuss her PMDD diagnosis and its impact on her mental health during an appearance on the Green Room Talks With Jenna Andrews podcast.

She acknowledged that PMDD significantly affects her relationships. “When you’re going through it so often, it’s hard to do anything when you get taken off the tracks for two weeks every month,” she explained.

New episodes of The D’Amelio Show drop every Wednesday on Hulu.
