Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird is opening up about how being on reality television actually saved her family. For some families, this would be the death of them. Yet, for Mama June’s girls, it seems to be the glue that held them together in times of crisis. So, how did this all work? Plus, which one of the girls almost was not on the show anymore? Viewers became enamored by the trainwreck that was Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. At the time, Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird was just an awkward tween. In fact, she and Mama June talked about how Pumpkin was bisexual when she was extremely young. It then led June to come out, as well. However, the show was eventually canceled but, luckily for fans, June and her family got another chance when June underwent a massive head-to-toe makeover. Mama June: From Not To Hot brought the Shannon/Efird/Thompson family back into viewers’ homes.

Unfortunately, a lot of negative things happened over the years with Mama June getting into drugs. Then, Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson went to go live with Pumpkin and her husband. At the time, Pumpkin was a new mother and a newlywed, still a kid herself. The show was rebranded Road to Redemption and then Family Crisis. This season ended with June’s four daughters giving her away at her vow renewal. Despite it all, it seems that the show actually saved them and kept them together, according to Pumpkin.

Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird told People this: “I definitely feel like it brings us closer together because although we may not have been talking at the time, we still had to get a job done. You still had to film together at times and you would always bottle down these types of things and it would be like, okay, well I can’t say this because we’re filming right now. But then, that’s why when you guys see me blow up at the meet and greet, that was all real-deal, bottled-up emotions for several years.”

The One Who Almost Quit

Viewers know that Mama June’s eldest daughter, Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell stopped filming after Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. She did return for two episodes of Family Crisis but there was one other daughter who almost quit. As it turns out, Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird. who has been lauded for raising her sister, almost left the show. She explained that it was when Mama June was deep into her addiction. Pumpkin really just wanted to deal with what was happening without everyone watching. Luckily, she stuck to it and everything worked out.
