Why Did Hallmark Cancel Mystery 101?

On Friday, Hallmark CEO Wonya Lucas was asked by The Sun why the network canceled their popular mystery series Mystery 101. Her response was brief.

Well, we hadn’t done it in a long, long time, right? And we just brought the mysteries back. So, we’re just looking at mysteries a little differently now.

She then added, “We’re taking some-we’ve created some new mysteries, in addition to some that we’ve had in the past. So, it’s just an evolution of our mysteries. We’re just doing a lot of new things.”

This answer really didn’t answer the question. However, it did sound like something Hallmark has already shared.

Hallmark Announced Mystery Series Cancelation In Social Media Post

Nearly two months ago, Mystery 101 fans were heartbroken by the unusual announcement that the series was over. On Facebook, a fan asked when Mystery 101 would return. This is when the person behind the Hallmark social media broke the news that no one wanted.

We loved making Mystery 101 and we’re so glad you enjoyed sleuthing along with us. We want to let you know that our talented sleuths have3 solved the last mystery and are off the case.

Then, the post continued with the promises of new mysteries for Sleuthers.

But, after two years, fans were angry. That is because this cancelation means that Hallmark did not resolve the cliffhanger.

How Was Mystery 101 Supposed To End In the Eighth Movie?

Since the cancelation, we have learned how the cliffhanger was resolved. Although Mystery 101 scribe John Christian Plummer did not write an eighth script for the series, he did share his synopsis with the Hallmark Mysteries & More podcast. He shares some details of the script. However, here is a basic synopsis.

Firstly, John Christian Plummer revealed that the final scene of Deadly History was nothing but a dream. In the final two scenes, viewers first saw Amy and Travis declare their love for each other. Next, it is months later. The scene shows Travis and another officer driving up to a crime scene. The victim was Amy’s fiancé. Then, the movie ended.

What would have happened in the eighth movie? Plummer shared that he envisioned that they would repeat that final Deadly History scene. However,  Amy wakes up and she is startled but finds herself in bed.  Moreover, Travis comes home. He wonders why she didn’t meet up with him for a meal at their favorite restaurant.

Throughout the story, Amy is having dreams and is extremely tired. It turns out that her former boyfriend is the janitor. He has been drugging her! But, it takes a very long time for the sleuthing couple to figure it out. Lastly, Detective Travis figures it out. Amy’s old fiancé has a nefarious past, and he is still alive.

In the end, the two get married.

Mystery 101 Fans Angry At Hallmark

Hallmark CEO Wonya Lucas may have expertly sidestepped answering why they canceled Mystery 101, but it seems to have made Sleuthers even madder.

One of the co-hosts of the Hallmarkies podcast, Ann Weatherly Scott, who talks mysteries and Mahogany expressed her frustration on Twitter. “I’m really frustrated with @hallmarkmovie that they will not give us a straight answer on why #Mystery101 was canceled. It’s disheartening. @hallmarkchannel.”

In another post, she pointed out that there was a four-year gap between Murder She Baked and Hannah Swensen. Therefore, the CEO’s answer made no sense. She wrote, “Also @hallmarkmovie #MurderSheBaked last movie was 2017 and it was shockingly resurrected in 2021, where changing things up is not a real answer. Because here we are the same 4 year time frame.”

  1. Hallmark is leaning towards total unconcern with its viewers. We get pulled into enjoying the characters and their series, wanting more. Then Hallmark chops it, claiming to need room for new shows. Farm pucks!!! It seems like all financial games, new writers, actors, equal less payout. Good bye Hallmark, I’m gone.

  2. There’s a real concern for me that the individuals in charge of bringing us very entertaining movies, whether it be Love Stories or Mysteries, have decided that their audiences will watch whatever they put out there. Most of us are very loyal to the channel and the characters they have developed and their storylines, but it seems like there is little concern for their viewers that made them so popular, especially since they’ve lost so many of our favorite Actors as they have moved over to GAC. That’s where I’m headed since we can’t get the shows we love to watch here
