Supernanny star Jo Frost has some advice for parents when it comes to asking vs. telling their kids what to do. It is sound advice, and the Lifetime network star hopes that it will help parents when dealing with troublesome kids in the future.

Here is what Jo had to say about this topic and how it might help parents down the line.

What advice does Supernanny Jo Frost have about ‘asking vs. telling’?

Jo Frost, the star of Supernanny, doesn’t just use her TV shows to help parents when it comes to dealing with their kids. She also uses her social media to offer tidbits of advice here and there. In a recent post, Jo offered parents some advice about why asking a kid to do something often doesn’t work as well as telling them to do it.

In the Instagram post, which showed Jo holding a little girl, she had the advice written on the photo itself. She also added a caption where she went more into depth on the topic. In the photo, she wrote, “if you want your child to follow an instruction stop asking them and getting annoyed when they say no.” She goes on to say a parent should “politely” tell them to do it. She gave an example of telling them it is time to go to the bathroom, rather than asking if they have to go.

In the caption, she wrote that “there’s a big difference between asking and telling, both require comment courtesy.” She went on to say that parents empower themselves more when they know what needs to be done and politely tell their kids to do it. When asking, instead of telling, the parents open themselves up for a power struggle. She said this also leads to the parents getting mad when the kids decline the “asking” when that actually offered the child a choice.

While most fans in the comments appreciated the advice, others debated it. However, one commenter summed up what most of the people agreeing with the Supernanny star said. “I’ll never understand why parents give their kid a CHOICE, only to mistreat their child when they don’t make the “right” choice. That’s not how learning works.”
