Netflix Viewers Make Statement About Dark Crime Thrillers
If there is any television genre that is blazingly hot right now, it is dark crime shows. Both true-crime series and fictional dark crime dramas are all the rage, and if there is one streaming service capitalizing on it right now, it’s Netflix.
At the moment, the two most popular streaming shows on Netflix right now are dark crime shows — one a true-crime series and the other a dark crime drama. Here is a look at the two shows.
Devil In Ohio Number One On Netflix
The top most-watched show on Netflix this past week was the dark crime drama Devil in Ohio. The series has a name actress for TV fans, with former Bones lead Emily Deschanel in the lead. While most fans remembered her as the awkward crime scene specialist solving crimes, she takes on a very different role in this series.
In Devil in Ohio, Deschanel is a hospital psychiatrist named Dr. Suzanne Mathis. She shelters a mysterious girl who escapes a cult. However, the girl’s arrival in her home begins to tear her own family apart. While the show hasn’t got the best reviews (27% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), people are still watching it a lot.
Last week, Devil in Ohio saw at the top of the Netflix TV show chart as one of the most-watched shows worldwide. According to the Netflix TV show rankings, Devil in Ohio was the second most-watched show in the entire world for the streaming service. Netflix also reported that the show gained 35.3 million hours of viewing time. It was a top 10 show in 52 different countries for Netflix.
Netflix Fans Love I Survived A Crime
On top of the fictional dark crime drama, Netflix has also seen a lot of success with true-crime shows. These have always been huge, from groundbreaking shows like Making a Murderer in 2015 to fun ones like Tiger King in 2020. The latest breakout true crime show is I Survived a Crime.
This series is a docu-series that tells the stories of people who were victims of crimes. Each episode will break down the crimes and see how the victims reacted to the experience, why they reacted like they did, and what they could have done differently in the situation. In the United States, I Survived a Crime ranked second behind only Devil in Ohio last week for Netflix. I am a Killer, a docuseries about death row inmates also ranked in the top 10.
Netflix will want to see if they can keep up this success with future releases. On September 14, the streaming service releases Sins of Our Mother, a limited series about a woman in jail for conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her fourth husband, her fifth husband’s wife, and her two youngest children.
