Plot of the series

The Netflix limited series Devil in Ohio is based on a true-life story. Polatin spoke about the novel in a Book Room Reviews interview, where she said the story explores the timeless struggle between good and evil. It is also about the strength it takes to overcome the adversity of your past.

The story involves 15-year-old Jules Mathis, who returns home from school to find a strange girl sitting in her kitchen. Her psychiatrist mother reveals that Mae is one of her patients at the hospital and will be staying with them for a few days. However, soon, the girl is wearing Jules’ clothing, sleeping in her bedroom and pushing her out of her position on the school paper. She is also flirting with Jules’ boyfriend and has no intention of leaving.

Soon things got weird, as Jules walks in on a half-dressed Mae, to spot a pentagram carved into the girl’s back. She then discovers that the girl is a survivor of a strange cult from a nearby town. Even worse, the cult will stop at nothing to get Mae back.

In her interview, Polatin explained that the novel Devil in Ohio is based on a true story, but she is keeping the background under wraps. However, a lot of what happens in the story actually did occur. The author said she took artistic license in order to fill in the blanks and flesh out the story for her book.
