Saturday Night Live Recently Poked Fun At Sportscasters With An ESPN-Themed Skit

Saturday Night Live has been running since 1975. The series, filmed at NBC Studios in New York City, has poked fun at many famous figures over the years.

On January 24, viewers saw singer and actress Teyana Taylor host the episode, with Geese serving as the musical guest. However, one recent skit ended up sparking reactions online.

The “NFL on ESPN” skit featured James Austin Johnson as Joe Buck and Andrew Dismukes as Troy Aikman. Taylor also appeared as Lisa Salters. During the sketch, they covered the AFC Championship between the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots.

The skit heavily featured the “hosts” promoting various shows for Hulu and Disney+. Amid the impersonations, the EPSN staff repeatedly advertised the fictional “Quefs,” about a group of queer chefs, complete with a guest appearance of Gavin Newsom. In addition, a few jokes were made about the hosts making early calls, and no one knowing who Jarrett Stidham was.

Some Fans Thought The Skit Was Poking Fun At The Wrong Network

However, many NFL fans have since called out different aspects of the SNL skit since it aired and has been released on YouTube. In particular, many didn’t think the actors really resembled the figures they were trying to portray. One commenter even suggested that Johnson and Dismukes should have switched roles.

In addition, another issue was that the joke poked fun at ESPN. However, the game being spoofed was being aired on CBS.

On the skit’s YouTube comments, however, the recurring “Quefs” joke, which appeared to be the main punchline, seemed to be popular. Some comments included:

  • “Neither look or sound a thing like Aikman or Buck and why did they even pick NFL on ESPN when the game is on CBS. Seems like the whole thing was just set up so whomever that is could do a bad Lisa Salters impression. Poorly thought out all the way around I guess.”
  • “Why does the guy who’s playing Joe Buck look like Troy Aikman and why does the guy who’s playing Troy Aikman look like Joe Buck.”
  • “Would have been funnier if they pretended to be Romo and Nantz you know the two actually calling the game.”
  • “For those complaining that they took a marginal joke and stretched it out for five minutes: that describes 99 percent of SNL sketches since the beginning.”
  • “Just make Quefs as a digital short. We’ll watch it. We’re easy like that.”
