Malcolm-Jamal Warner has joined the cast of the hit ABC procedural series 9-1-1. The popular television star will play a nurse named Amir in the series, and the synopsis says he has a “complicated past.” The network has released a first-look sneak peek at his role on the show and what fans can expect.

Here is a look at the first look at Malcolm-Jamal Warner on 9-1-1.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Joins 9-1-1 Cast

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has a long history as a popular television star. Most fans got to know him when he played Theodore Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. That was one of the most-watched sitcoms of the 1990s and it helped make the young man a star, although he mostly stuck with television after that.

Thanks to his breakout on The Cosby Show, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role as Theo. He went on to star as Malcolm McGee on the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie (1996-2000) and Dr. Alex Reed in the sitcom Reed Between the Lines (2011-2015). He was the clear star of those shows (his character’s name was in the titles).

Outside of that, he won a Grammy Award for his song “Jesus Children” and executive produced The Magic School Bus. He also starred as Al Cowlings in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and as Dr. AJ Austin in The Resident. Now, he is back with a new recurring role on 9-1-1.

On 9-1-1, Malcolm-Jamal Warner stars as Amir, a “friendly nurse with a complicated past.” The sneak peek shows him hitting it off with Maddie, who is a former nurse as well.

What To Expect From Malcolm-Jamal Warner on 9-1-1

The sneak peek from 9-1-1 sees Malcolm-Jamal Warner meeting Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), as she is at the hospital following up on an accident. When he turns to face her, she sees half of his face is burned and scarred.

That is when she blurts out that she understands trauma because her ex-husband tried to kill her. She then pauses and apologizes for oversharing. This causes Amir to say, “I tend to trigger honesty in people, maybe because they feel sorry for me.” She backtracks and says his scrubs triggered her since she was a former nurse.

After they share some quips about the pay and hours, they agree they like where they ended up and shake hands after the introduction. While it looks like Amir and Maddie are off to a good start, the character’s description indicates he has a tie to Bobby’s (Peter Krause) past. What that is remains to be seen.
