The next season of American Idol will look a bit different. Earlier this year, Katy Perry announced that she will not be returning for another season of the beloved competition show. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about who will fill the judge’s position. There have been a number of names dropped, including Miley Cyrus and Jelly Roll. However, Luke Bryan and Ryan Seacrest recently weighed in on the possibility of Meghan Trainor taking Katy Perry’s spot. Here is what they had to say.

American Idol Fans Wonder If Meghan Trainor Will Replace Katy

On Monday, the season 22 competitors were narrowed down to the final 10. Meghan Trainor was a guest on the episode and she offered up some of her own opinions based on her expertise as a coach.

Naturally, seeing Meghan Trainor next to the rest of the judges got people wondering about the possibility of her stepping up to fill Katy Perry’s shoes on American Idol.

Katy Perry announced her plans to leave Idol earlier this year. Fans were shocked, but she shared that she wants to work more on music. She will be focusing on producing new songs and performing in the near future.

The American Idol judge said that she’d be open to coming back at some point though. Her announcement has had fans scrambling to find out who will be the new judge on the competition show.

Judges & Ryan Seacrest Share Their Thoughts On Trainor

Luke Bryan shared his thoughts on Trainor becoming the new judge. “I think Megan’s always been real fun. You know, that’s kinda been her brand, to have fun,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “[She’s] real witty, so certainly.”

While Luke Bryan likes Meghan Trainor, he admitted that he has “10 names” or more in his head already as potential replacements. He also said that he hasn’t been in on any conversations happening with the producers to give him any insight there.

Fellow judge Lionel Richie weighed in on what he thinks will make the best replacement for Katy Perry. The perfect judge in his eyes must be fun, but no ego, he said. “Because we’re gonna insult each other so much,” Richie laughed. “And when you’re with Luke, he doesn’t know he’s killin’ ya.”

Richie did not weigh in on Meghan Trainor filling Katy Perry’s spot at the judge’s table, but he did reveal that he has some thoughts of his own. He threw out names like Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift.

“I’ve got my list, but Kelly, if you don’t have anything else to do, I’d like to drop that out there,” he said. “I’m a big fan. Oh, and by the way, Taylor, if you’re available, we’d like to have you out. Call me!” he added.

Longtime American Idol host Ryan Seacrest also gushed over Trainor when asked for his thoughts. “She was very good,” he told ET. “Megan is a super talent, too, and she’s got a great sense of humor. She’s fun and she’s spontaneous.”

There is still no telling who will replace Katy Perry in the upcoming season of Idol, but it is expected that producers will make an announcement later this year.

American Idol airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
