‘The View’ Whoopi Goldberg Retracts Statement She Was In Jail

Whoopi Goldberg, The View

On March 6, Whoopi Goldberg gave conflicting statements that confused The View audience about the truth. After confessing she had spent time in jail, she later walks back the disclosure.

Hot Topic Luck Of The Draw

During The View Hot Topics segment, moderator, Whoopi Goldberg, mentioned that the panel wasn’t interested in the selected topic. Then she introduces a new way to have an alternate discussion. Surprisingly, a bag dangles from a rope and Whoopi pulls a new subject for discussion out of a shimmering “HT” bag. After picking, Whoopi reads, “Would you rather hike the Appalachian Trail by yourself or spend six months in jail?” Admittedly, Joy Behar says she would “rather watch Netflix.” Then Alyssa Farrah Griffin and Sunny Hostin both chose to keep their freedom and take the Appalachian Trail.

But Joy told them that was “a stupid choice.” After considering the options, Sara Haines thinks she would rather go to jail, but specifies as long as she’s not in the general population. Noting that she takes well to structure as a Virgo. However, the producer clarified it would be gen-pop. Later in the conversation Joy simplifies the answer and says, “The trail and get an Uber.” However, Whoopi’s answer surprises everyone. She simply says, “Well, I’ve done both,” keeping a serious look on her face.

Whoopi Goldberg Retracts Her Statement

Undeniably, Whoopi Goldberg’s response garnered intrigue from Joy Behar. Eagerly wanting more details she presses, “When were you in jail?” Others ask, “When were you on the Appalachian Trail?” Whoopi says, “Does it matter?” Then answers, “I’ll tell you about it.” After returning from a commercial break, Whoopi breaches the subject again. Admittedly, clarifying, “I don’t want people freaking out.” Then she retracts the original claim. Saying, “There are jokes. When you say, ‘Yeah, maybe I did the Appalachian Trail and went to jail,’ don’t get it twisted. I’m a humorist, OK?” Additionally, she mysteriously deters anyone from looking further into her background for information about being in the clink. “Stop looking it up,” she jokes. “That’s what I know is happening, is that right? People are looking, ‘When did she go to jail?’ You’ll be looking until the cows come home, honey.”

Whoopi Goldberg’s Past Arrest

Although The View moderator, Whoopi Goldberg, tries to distract from her past, a quick search uncovers an arrest. In May 1985 at the University of California Berkeley’s campus during a protest over racial policies in South Africa, Whoopi was placed under arrest. Along with Berkeley’s mayor at the time, Gus Newport, they were in custody with roughly twelve others. According to an Associated Press syndicated article in The New York Times, each was charged with blocking entrances to the headquarters. Afterward, Whoopi appeared at Berkeley Municipal Court. Then her release was contingent on signing a “promise to appear” on June 6 for the charge of blocking a public entrance.

What do you think about Whoopi Goldberg’s answer? Do you think she has done both? Or neither? Was she just being funny with no underlying truth? Does it seem confusing to you? Do you like that The View introduced a bag of alternate Hot Topic options? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
