After being married for 20 years, Fixer Upper stars, Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines are talking about the changes they are experiencing. Not only have they been a couple, but they have also worked together, and raised five kids alongside each other. But they are opening up about a major change that has occurred.

Life With Fixer Upper Stars

During the past twenty years, Joanna and Chip Gaines have raised five kids together: Drake, 18, Ella, 16, Duke, 15, Emmie, 13, and Crew, 5. Earlier this year they said “goodbye’ to their oldest son, Drake, as he left for college. “The greatest gift of having a kid go off to college and having a 5-year-old is that perspective,” Joanna says. “It’s not here forever. We don’t want to waste these moments.” But this isn’t the only change the family has seen this year.

Many Changes Have Occurred For The Gaines

Not only did the family have to adjust to one member moving away, but Joanna and Chip Gaines have gone through many other changes this year. For instance, the two released a new podcast network. And, they announced several new reality shows. One example is completing renovations on Hotel 1928 in Waco and recently opening it. Unquestionably, it is one of the most noteworthy projects of their careers. Along with that excitement, a new short series following the project released, Fixer Upper: The Hotel. Earlier this month it began showing on Max and Magnolia Network.

Personal Changes For The Fixer Upper Stars

Recently, Joanna Gaines has been branching off to do more things on her own. Notably, she is facing her fears by starting new hobbies in horseback riding and beekeeping. And while Chip Gaines says he supports her, he is hanging back saying, “I’m like, ‘Hey, you go do whatever. My knees are killing me.’” Admittedly, she blames it on a possible “midlife crisis” but she says, “We just see life differently now.”

Given their history, the two have discussed they are entering a new phase of their relationship. Notably, Joanna Gaines reveals, “I would say, as we’re getting older, I’m shifting and I’m more like Chip, and Chip is more like me.” And agreeing, Chip Gaines says, “Jo and I are in this beautiful moment. We’re evolving into each other.” Adding, “It’s the second part of our marriage.”

Previously, during Fixer Upper seasons and their spinoffs, fans have identified Joanna as the one who stays calm and organized. Conversely, Chip was always goofing off and indulging in more risky behaviors like standing on top of a ladder or breaking through walls with his body.

Learning From Each Other

Even so, after 20 years together, the Fixer Upper couple still checks in on their dreams, “Mine are real practical,” says Chip. “Jo’s are always funny. She’s got these really vivid dreams—big adventure and all this Technicolor.” Joanna Gaines comments, “You’ve rubbed off on me.” Continuing, “I think that’s the beauty of relationships in general. If Chip weren’t my partner, I would probably still be in the corner. From the moment I met him, he’s always experienced change in a positive way. Even if it was negative, it was, ‘All right. What do we do next?’”

Additionally, she says, “I believe it now.” Adding, “We’ve had so much change in our lives, and the proof is there: Change is hard, but it’s always beautiful.” And Chip Gaines offered, “I hope that it’s just the beginning.” Continuing, “I hope that we get to look back in 20 years from now, and feel just as confident that we were meant to be. We really feel like we are in some ways just getting started.”
