The famous Fixer Upper couple has a lot on their plate and many things happening on the horizon for the Magnolia Network. But Joanna Gaines takes time to get real about life. As a mother of five, when Fixer Uppers Joanna Gaines sent her oldest son Drake away to college it was heartbreaking. In general, for that reason, any time kids return home, it’s good for a mama’s heart. Joanna opens up about her experience with Drake going to college and now returning home.

Letting Pieces Of Your Heart Go

Joanna and Chip Gaines are parents to five wonderful children, Drake, 18, Ella, 16, Duke, 15, Emmie, 13, and Crew, 5.  Knowing Drake’s departure to college was just a matter of time, in August 2022, Joanna Gaines wrote a very personal note. Explaining that it felt like a loss, she opened up about the change of seasons in life for the Magnolia Journal.

When Drake graduated from high school in May, Joanna posted a tribute on Instagram. In light of the big moment, she shared a video capturing special times from his childhood. “Soon, our oldest son, Drake, will be leaving home for college,” Joanna admitted at the time. “In the grand scheme of heartbreaking things, this one comes with a lot of gratitude and excitement.” As the feelings permeated, she said, “But still, my first child is moving away, and our family dynamic will change because of it, and that can feel like a loss of its own.”

Welcome Home, No Matter The Reason

Joanna Gaines welcomed Drake home with open arms and some favorite sweets to show how much she missed him. Therefore, upon his homecoming to Waco, he was showered with goodies. In a similar fashion, Joanna made lemon crinkle cookies and her famous classic chocolate chip cookies. With all the feels intact, Joanna Gaines’ eldest son Drake walked back into an outpouring of love. Reportedly, Joanna Gaines excitedly posted on her Instagram Story photos of a variety of cookies for her 18-year-old son’s visit. Having the family back whole does the heart good.

Joanna Gaines’ Extra Special Sweetness

The warm embrace she gave Drake, also comes with a history of special sentiment. In 2018, Joanna Gaines gave a special cookie recipe to purchasers in her cookbook Magnolia Table. Generously, she also shared her sentimental chocolate chip cookie recipe in Southern Living for widespread enjoyment.

Giving a precious memory, she said, “My dad has an intense sweet tooth, just like me. One afternoon when I was around ten years old, Dad got a hankering and he enlisted me to help him make Toll House chocolate chip cookies. That was the first time he and I had ever baked together. Since then, whenever I make chocolate chip cookies, including the ones from this recipe, I think of him and that special afternoon we spent together in the kitchen.”

Surprisingly, her recipe is modified to reduce the butter. While she has tweaked the recipe, it still carries the full joy with each baking session that it always has. She explained, “I do truly believe that butter makes everything better and no one is more surprised than I am about how amazing these taste even though they’re made with less of the good stuff than most traditional chocolate chip cookies.”

Welcome back Drake and remember to soak up all the family time you can.

What do you think of Joanna Gaines’ heartfelt message? Do you think it will be as hard saying goodbye this time? What helps heal your heart? Send some love in the comments.
