English dub fans of the popular Digimon anime have been starving in recent years. The anime has hit a new renaissance with a number of new shows. Both Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 have even gotten new full-length films. But, sadly, these have all been available with only English subtitles up until this point. It seems as though many weren’t certain the popularity in the US was enough to warrant proper dubbing. But, that all may be changing. For the first time in a long time, a series in the popular franchise is getting a dub.
Digimon Adventure 2020
The series in question is Digimon Adventure 2020. It’s the popular reboot and reimagining of the original hit ’90s anime that made the franchise so wildly popular. It brings all the original characters and their partners back and puts them into a new story as the Digidestined.
Sort of like the series from the ’90s that Digimon Adventure 2020 was rebooting, this anime was like a birth for the franchise. The 2020 reboot is a new birth, after a kind of death in popularity and cultural relevance over the last decade. Digimon stopped being what it was back in its heyday. It fell behind to more popular franchises and direct competitors like Pokemon.
But, things began to come back around with this reboot series. So it’s only fitting that the English dub announcement finally came from Toei Animation just recently. Digimon fans all over the English-speaking world are rejoicing as they’re able to finally watch this show the way many want. Sadly, this revival dub won’t have many of the original voice cast, unlike with the original Japanese cast. Many of the English dub actors have passed away or retired since the original series three decades ago. Several replacements had to be found. That doesn’t mean there’s not still plenty to enjoy with this dub, though. It’s just great to have it around.
More Digital World
Digimon continues its revival with a number of new projects coming up. The Digimon Adventure 02 cast is coming back for a brand new film. It should be launching in Japan this October. The new original series, Digimon: Ghost Game, just put out its finale in late March. As of writing this, there still is no announcement about an English dub for that. But, this DA2020 dub is a promising sign that fans may be getting a Ghost Game dub sometime in the future. It only makes sense.
Digimon Adventure 2020 is available with subtitles and English dubbing. The version with subtitles is available on Crunchyroll but the English dub is currently only available for purchase on the Microsoft store.
