Sister Wives fans wonder why Kody Brown stopped loving his first wife Meri Brown. This comes after Meri and her former husband jointly released a statement on Instagram confirming their relationship is over. After more than 30 years of marriage and working their way through several rough patches, they announced their split in 2022. Although fans feel the catfish incident distorted their relationship, problems in their relationship started way earlier. So, why did Kody Brown stop loving Meri? Meri Brown Didn’t Want To Give Up Her Legal Wife Status
Kody and Meri Brown exchanged their vows in April 1990. She was legally wed to the Brown family patriarch. However, after Robyn Brown entered the family, Kody wanted to change the legal structure of the family. He divorced Meri in order to marry Robyn legally and adopt three kids from her previous marriage. This was the first breaking point of the relationship between Meri and Kody. Although in a clip shared by TLC on YouTube, Meri willingly gave up her legal wife status, it was apparent that she didn’t want that.

Despite the fact that they remained spiritually married, they confirmed that their romance is dead and over. In an emotional therapy session in Season 15 of the TLC show, Meri hashed out things confirming that their relationship is in turmoil.
Kody Brown Claims Meri Brown Deceived Him
On the other hand, Kody claimed that Meri deceived him. He claimed, “I feel like I was deceived into a relationship that was very different than what I expected. Meri and I had a fast courtship with a lot of expectations and a lot of not communicating. I didn’t know who I was marrying. As things unfolded, I started to become troubled and bitter by the situation I was in.”

Although a husband’s love for his wife shouldn’t change with her ability to have kids, Kody’s love was surely affected. For the longest time, Meri struggled with infertility. The former couple did welcome a daughter, Mariah Brown, they tried for more. However, they did try for more kids but Meri suffered a miscarriage and never carried her pregnancy to term.
Meri Brown Wanted To Try IVF Or Surrogacy
Given how Kody has several kids with his other wives, it was apparent that Meri’s inability to bear more children affected their relationship.
There also came a point where Meri wanted to give IVF or surrogacy a thought. However, Kody didn’t want the same. He said, “I would do it if nature just did it. But because of the stakes, I’m not burning in my gut to do it. You know what I’m saying? I say no.”

However, Meri later revealed that she did want to try for more before Kody shot her down. This was a big test of their relationship and Kody’s outright denial confirmed that they didn’t think as a couple.
Kody and Meri’s relationship went down the drain because of several reasons. However, it is apparent that the crack started with Robyn entering the family and becoming the legal wife.
