- ‘Rick And Morty’: New Details Emerge On Justin Roiland Re-Cast - June 15, 2023
Rick and Morty fans took a massive hit recently upon learning about the charges currently against series co-creator Justin Roiland. The star of the show and the voice of both main characters may be going to jail for domestic battery of an ex-girlfriend. This story is as horrifying as it is sad for the victim and for Roiland’s fans. Yet, the bad behavior accusations against Justin don’t stop there. A new report contains anonymous accounts alleging Roiland’s terrible attitude during the creation of Rick and Morty. The question at this point is has he had anything to do with the recent seasons at all?
A Fall From Grace
The Hollywood Reporter is the source for all of these new allegations against Justin Roiland. They wrote a scathing piece that details anonymous accounts from multiple staffers working on Rick and Morty. The picture they paint of Roiland is one of a man who has had little involvement in the show for years.
In fact, the article states that Roiland “has not had any meaningful creative presence on any of the series that bear his name.” This includes shows like Solar Opposites and the more recent Hulu series Koala Man. He apparently rarely even came to the office to work on R&M after Season 3. When he did come to the office, he was usually more of a distraction than a creative help.
The article details how oftentimes when Justin did come, it was only to give a tour to some famous fans. These fans apparently included “Kanye West, the comedians on Impractical Jokers and porn star Riley Reid.” He would also bring his dogs or nerf guns to the office and generally distract everyone from getting any work done.
“It reached a point where multiple sources say it was easier when Roiland wasn’t in the room,” the article states.
This new report paints a far less sympathetic picture of a man who was formerly considered an animation legend to many.
Rick and Morty Continues
The downfall of Justin Roiland is not the downfall of Rick and Morty. Whether or not that is a positive thing remains to be seen. In Adult Swim’s statement severing ties with Justin, they did state that production on Rick and Morty will continue. Dan Harmon, originally co-creator and showrunner with Roiland, is now the sole showrunner. It’s not his first time being the sole person at the helm. His previous work on Community speaks volumes about his personal track record. The question is whether or not the impact on fans will be the same with someone else as the voice of their favorite two characters.
Rick and Morty Season 7 is still on the way. The first six seasons of the show are available for streaming now on HBO Max.
