Rick and Morty Season 6 is now over after another 10-episode season. Once again, they went out with a bang, and this may be one of the biggest bangs yet. Like the finale for Season 5, the Season 6 finale has major implications for the show. Season 5’s finale had consequences for the entire multiverse. However, Season 6’s finale has significant consequences on the trajectory of the characters in the upcoming season. So what does this finale mean for Season 7? Will Rick and Morty ever be the same?

The Season 6 Finale

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE RICK AND MORTY SEASON 6 FINALE:

The end of Season 6 brings the idea that Season 7 may have a very specific focus in mind. The hunt for “Rick Prime.” Rick Prime is the original Rick from the original universe of the Morty we’ve been following since Season 1, Episode 1. He’s the Rick that murdered the wife and child of the Rick we’ve also been following since the beginning. We’ve been getting references to Rick Prime since Season 3. Yet, the show has been avoiding going too far down the lore rabbit hole for him.

The show’s self-referential nature has provided the reason for that being the creators being afraid of Rick and Morty turning into too much of a soap opera. They’ve wanted to keep the self-contained episode format we’ve had since Season 1 while occasionally dipping into the deeper story when they feel like it. The finale of Season 6 may signal an end to that. At least, for now. We may be stepping into a season entirely driven by a singular plot in Season 7. The hunt for Rick Prime is on.

Of course, this could all be thrown away early in Season 7, as well. The finale of Season 5 led viewers to believe that Season 6 may be all about fixing the multiversal issue that Evil Morty created. This wound up being a bit of a rug pull with god-like dinosaurs stepping in and fixing the issue in a couple of minutes. Because it’s Rick and Morty, things like that just happen sometimes.

Rick and Morty Moving Forward

Rick and Morty are quickly expanding into a media empire. They’re finally receiving their first spinoff with Rick and Morty: The Anime which is premiering next year. This could just be the beginning of a much wider Rick and Morty-verse that takes over television in the future. It’s not too difficult to imagine considering the wide appeal and endless possibilities of the multiverse that creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have set up. We’ll have to see where it goes for here, but for now, we have two shows to look forward to in 2023, and maybe even more moving forward.

Every episode of Rick and Morty Season 6 is out now available for streaming on HBO Max. Will you be watching?
