Adult Swim’s Rick And Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland has been fired from the show after being charged with domestic battery. However, the popular show won’t face any issues due to its key personnel being fired. Additionally, Hulu has also dropped Roiland, who worked on the streamer’s animated shows Solar Opposites and Koala Man. Keep reading to find out more details about the incident that led to Justin Roiland’s firing!
Justin Roiland Voiced Title Characters In Rick And Morty
Roiland has voiced Rick And Morty’s title characters and is key to the show’s authenticity. However, the network maintains that this won’t affect the show in any manner and the series will continue as is. The American animator has been charged with domestic violence in Orange County, California, in connection with a 2020 incident. This was in line with the criminal complaint filed in May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney. On Thursday, the 42-year-old appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing.
Earlier in 2020, Justin pleaded not guilty after which his attorney wrote in a statement that his client is innocent and expected that the case will be dismissed. His attorney T. Edward Welbourn wrote, “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”
Justin Roiland Released On $50,000 Bond
As reported by CNBC, the criminal complaint charges Roiland with “One felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit.”
The complaint further revealed that the alleged incident occurred on or about January 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time. As per the court records, the case has been the subject of more than a dozen court hearings including several pre-trial hearings. As of now, no trial date has been set for the case. The Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award winner was also arrested in August 2020 and released on a bond of $50,000.
Rick And Morty Co-Creator Also Developed NFT Projects
Although the domestic violence charges remain unsolved, Justin Roiland’s career has progressed a lot. In 2021, he released an NFT art collection that sold for a whopping $1.65 Million. In 2022, he released another NFT project and also sold his first painting via Sotheby’s auction. Apart from his associations with Hulu and Adult Swim cartoons, Roiland has also developed a video game. In 2022, he released the High On Life game via his Squanch Games studio.
Soon, it became the top-selling game on Steam and was also the fourth most-played game on Xbox the same week of its release.
