Netflix Ready With Another True Crime Drama After ‘Dahmer’
After Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story, Ryan Murphy is back again with another masterpiece. Slated to premiere on October 13, 2022, Netflix’s upcoming series The Watcher is based on true events. Starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, this true crime drama trails the story of a married couple. Everything in the couple’s life is regular but things take a 360-degree turn after they move into their dream home in New Jersey. And no, there isn’t anything haunting about the house.
So, what happened to the couple? What is the real story that inspired Ryan Murphy to create this series? Keep reading to find out!
Netflix’s The Watcher Is A Story About The Broaddus Family
Netflix’s limited series, The Watcher, is based on the real-life Broaddus family’s story. Derek and Maria Broaddus had found the perfect home in a six-bedroom house located at 657 Boulevard, Westfield, New Jersey. With renovations going on, they hadn’t yet moved in. However, after Derek finished painting the house in the evening, he went outside to check the mail.

Given that they had closed the deal on the house just three days ago, they didn’t expect much in the mail. However, there were a few bills & a white, card-shaped envelope that caught Derek’s attention.
What Did The Watcher’s Letter Say?
In thick and clunky handwriting, the letter was addressed to “The New Owner.” The letter started with warm greetings and read:
“Dearest new neighbor at 657 Boulevard, allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood.”

As Derek kept reading the letter, things took a cryptic turn as the writer asked,
“How did you end up here? Did 657 Boulevard call to you with its force within? 657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched it in the 1960s. It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out.”

The writer described the house as if it had a mind of its own. He was also disappointed at the fact that the couple was renovating the house as he wrote,
“I see already that you have flooded 657 Boulevard with contractors so that you can destroy the house as it was supposed to be. Tsk, tsk, tsk… bad move. You don’t want to make 657 Boulevard unhappy.”
The Watcher Was Never Identified Or Caught By the Police
This is just one of the many letters the family received. Each of them contained cryptic details as if the house is being watched 24/7. As per People.com, the creepy stalker even threatened to murder his children and sacrifice the young blood to the house. And, the worst part of the story is, the stalker remains unidentified.

The couple received a total of four letters and dropped the idea of moving in. They tried their best to sell the house or rent it for years but the rumors of the stalker didn’t help. Finally, after years, they finally sold it for $959,000. They bought a second home in Westfield and kept their location secret to ensure the stalker cannot harm them in any way.

Ever since the couple has kept a low profile. Although Derek is active on Twitter, they ensure their whereabouts aren’t open to the public.
