With Hallmark movies like A Shoe Addict’s Christmas, Taking A Shot At Love, and The Mistletoe Promise, even the most casual viewer knows who the charming Luke Mcfarlane is.

Now, with the upcoming big screen movie, Bros, everyone is talking about that Hallmark actor who is starring in the first gay rom-com from a major studio.

But, most do not realize that this Hallmark Hunk went to Juilliard. Although he is a talented cello player, as shown in Chateau Christmas, he attended the prestigious school for acting. Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain was even in his class so the expectations were high.

Fellow Juilliard student, Erin Krakow has been known to gush over Macfarlane’s gorgeous looks. Younger’s Michael Urie, another student at the prestigious New York school also remembered him as being the science geek who could act.

Therefore, now that there is so much positive press about his upcoming big screen movie, Bros, viewers wonder if he will still be drinking hot chocolate, and having an almost-kiss on the feel-good channel ever again.

Hallmark Star ‘Finally A Hollywood Leading Man’

In Vanity Fair’s new interview with Luke Macfarlane, entitled, “In Bros, Luke Macfarlane Is finally A Hollywood Leading Man” they went on his journey from Hallmark to the big screen.

Right now, he is starring in the upcoming Bros and everyone is finally paying attention to this mighty talented actor.

But this road has been full of bumps along the way. Right out of school, Luke had several roles, including the role of Scotty In Brothers & Sisters. In this show, he and Michael Rhys’ character Kevin walked down the aisle. At the same time, gay marriage was banned in California with Proposition 8.

At this time, Luke felt it necessary to come out and share his “truth,” and did so to the Canadian paper, The Globe & Mail. After that, he had issues getting roles.

“I can literally remember an agent once saying to me, ‘Superman can’t be gay’—like just straight out.”

Hallmark Was The First Network To Luke Macfarlane After Coming Out

In 2014, Hallmark called him up to film The Memory Book. Turns out, everything on set was “well-run,” and they paid well. This was the beginning of 14 movies in eight years, including his upcoming Christmas movie.

“I sometimes wonder if Hallmark even knew I was gay when they first started to put me in the movies. I remember reading the script and being like, What is this? It’s very light, and there’s flannel, and a canoe ride. And it’s delightful! I didn’t understand.”

Michael Urie even believes that Luke’s time at Hallmark has something to do with their recent inclusivity.

“Being able to be a leading man, as both playing straight and still being out and proud—Hallmark sort of evolved with Luke, and maybe even because of Luke.”

Why Luke Macfarlane’s Christmas Movie Is Likely His Last

Currently, Luke Macfarlane is filming Hallmark’s Christmas Village with Alison Sweeney. This is a great pairing, but sadly, this will likely be his last movie with Hallmark.

He told the LA Times, “They’ve been very good to me, but I think I’ve told my story for now with those folks.” After laughing, he joked, “I mean, how many firefighters can I play?”

Nonetheless, no matter what bigger and better things are ahead of him, he did share something he learned by making Hallmark movies.

“One thing that I really enjoyed about making Hallmark movies is it’s really fun to flirt. It’s fun to play that energy on camera, where relationships are at their best in those early times. I guess Hallmark has given me a lot of flirting lessons.”

Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas starts on October 22. We will share the date of Luke’s final movie once we have it!

Bros will be in theaters starting on September 30.
