Jason Momoa’s ‘Slumberland’ Coming To Netflix: What You Need To Know

Jason Momoa has quickly become a fan-favorite actor, thanks to his roles in the DCEU as Aquaman. Plus, Game of Thrones and the recent Apple TV series See. Next, he heads to Netflix for the fantasy movie Slumberland.

Here is what you need to know about Jason Momoa’s Slumberland.

What is Jason Momoa’s Slumberland about?

Slumberland is a fantasy movie where Jason Momoa stars as a nine-foot monster-human hybrid named Flip. The story follows an 11-year-old girl named Nema who finds a secret map to the world of dreams as well as nightmares. Momoa’s character serves as her guide as she heads into Slumberland to find her late father.

The movie is based on a comic strip from 1905 called Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay. In that strip, a little boy followed the creature, but this will change it into a girl, changing her name to Nema. Flip claims to Nema that he and her father Peter used to be outlaws together, stealing from other people’s dreams. This sends her into that land with Flip, hoping to find a way to wish her father back into her life.

Who is in Slumberland on Netflix?

Jason Momoa in Slumberland

Jason Momoa is the lead role in Slumberland as Flip, the giant monster/human hybrid. It is his job to lead Nema through the enchanted land as she searches for her father. Fans know Momoa from Aquaman (Aquaman), Game of Thrones (Khal Drogo)Dune (Duncan Idaho), and See (Baba Voss).

Newcomer Marlow Barkley stars as the young girl, Nema. She goes in search of her father in the movie (much like the plot from A Wrinkle in Time), and Kyle Chandler stars as Peter, Nema’s dad. Chandler has been in a lot of movies and TV shows over the years, with notable roles in Friday Night Lights (Eric Taylor) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Dr. Mark Russell).

Also appearing in the movie are Chris O’Dowd (Thor: The Dark World), Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You), and India de Beaufort (One Day At a Time). Francis Lawrence directed the movie after working with Jason Momoa on the Apple+ TV series See. David Guion and Michael Handelman (Night at the Museum: The Secret Tomb) penned the script.

When Does Slumberland With Jason Momoa Hit Netflix?

Slumberland began production in 2020 when Jason Momoa signed on to the project. Filming finally started in February 2021 and wrapped up in May 2021. This means the movie stopped shooting 15 months ago, which gave the production ample time for post-production. This was important since Flip will appear as CGI with performance capture work by Momoa. Flip is nine-foot-tall, half-man, half-beast, with shaggy fur and long curved tusks.

However, there is no official release date set yet by Netflix outside of 2022. With the theme of the movie, there is a good bet this could be a holiday movie for the streaming giant, but that won’t be determined until Netflix releases the news and a trailer. Netflix released two photos and the news that Slumberland is coming soon on Twitter.
