Netflix Bringing Back ‘One Tree Hill’ Sequel With Original Stars
Netflix has made a huge announcement for television fans. Just like they did with Gilmore Girls, the streaming giant is now doing the same for One Tree Hill. The popular young adult television drama series is returning with many original cast members.
Here is what you need to know about the new rebooted series and who is returning to star in it.
One Tree Hill Returning For Reboot At Netflix
Netflix is actively developing a One Tree Hill sequel series. Two of the show’s original stars, Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush, will executive produce and reprise their roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, respectively. The show will pick up 20 years later, with Brooke and Peyton raising teenagers of their own.
While Burton and Bush will return, it appears that Chad Michael Murray will not return for the sequel series (via Deadline). Murray played Lucas Scott in the original series. Since this is 20 years later, and the original series was based on high schoolers, it is no surprise not everyone will return.
Instead, Chad Michael Murray is starring in Sullivan’s Crossing, which airs on CTV in Canada and is broadcast on American television on The CW.
Becky Hartman Edwards (The Bold Type, Firefly Lane) is writing the scripts. Jensen and Danneel Ackles are also listed as executive producers. Daneel Ackles played Rachel Gatina in the original series and is in talks to return.
While the show seems to be in development, reps for WBTV and Netflix have declined to comment.
One Tree Hill Remains Popular
One Tree Hill premiered in 2003 and ran for nine seasons. It aired on The WB, which turned into The CW. It ended up wrapping up in 2012. While Netflix is bringing the sequel to fans, the actual show streams on Max and Hulu.
The show featured an ensemble cast with most of the main stars as teens in high school. On top of Bush, Burton, Murray, and Ackles, the cast featured James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson, Lee Norris, Robert Buckley, Shantel VanSanten, and Jana Kramer.
Fans might be following along, as Bush and Burton also have a podcast called Drama Queens, where they rewatch the series and talk about their memories. They also invite celebrities on the show, both former cast members and fans. Bethany Joy Lenz also helped launch the show and Robert Buckley joined up in July.
The One Tree Hill cast also reunited recently for a charity basketball game, which was attended by an auditorium full of fans.
