After a very long wait, Netflix has announced the Squid Game Season 2 release date. The series aired its first season three years ago, and it is finally returning just in time for the holidays. The streaming giant also released a small first look teaser trailer about the new season.

Here is when the show is returning to Netflix and what fans can expect.

Squid Game Season 2 Release Date

Squid Game Season 2 will be a late Christmas present from Netflix in 2024. According to the streaming giant, the second season of the South Korean hit series will drop on December 26. As with almost all shows on Netflix, the entire series will drop at once.

There was even bigger news. Squid Game will be a three-season series, and the third season will arrive in 2025, meaning a much shorter wait to see how the story concludes. After waiting three years for Season 2 (which the first look trailer teases), fans should be thrilled to know the wait won’t be as long for Season 3.

There is no word on when in 2025 the third season will arrive, but this means it was either filmed back-to-back with Season 2 or they are filming right now, as there are plenty of effects shots used in this survival series.

The show realizes how long the wait was between seasons, so the news release also indicated that there was also a three-year gap between the two seasons in the fictional world as well.

What Is Squid Game Season 2 About?

Netflix released a first-look teaser for Squid Game Season 2. However, this first look didn’t do much to show what was going to happen. It mostly played into the Olympics, as there was a track competition going on and soon the people in the familiar green tracksuits replaced the regular runners and many began to fall dead.

While the first look didn’t show too much, Netflix has already said what Season 2 is about. In the first season, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) won the game. However, instead of taking his winnings (a lifetime worth of money) to live a comfortable life, he used it to “find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.”

However, he soon learns the only way to end the game is to reenter it, which means things will become deadly for him once again. The first look shows the Masked Men inviting Player 456 to enter again while the competitors raced and died on the track and spectators watched.

Lee Byung-hun returns as Front Man, Wi Ha-jun, as Detective Hwang Jun Ho, and Gong Yoo as The Salesman.
