‘Antiques Roadshow’ Gets Unbelievable News About Old Purchase
Antiques Roadshow on PBS always seems to bring wild and positive stories to viewers. The people appearing on the show in the past have gotten incredible news about items that they never believed could be worth a small fortune. It happened again this past week as one guest was left speechless about a 40-year-old purchase.
Here is a look at this special find and why the person was shocked that it ended up worth as much as it was.
Antiques Roadshow Reveals Oz Movie Props
With Wicked in theaters for the holiday season, many fans are looking back on The Wizard of Oz. That original movie, released in 1939, was a landmark in fantasy filmmaking, and some items from that specific film appeared on an episode of Antiques Roadshow.
A man came onto Antiques Roadshow with two large props used in the original Wizard of Oz movie. He had purchased the items 40 years earlier. He then met with Kathleen Guzman, who gave him her evaluation of the props and what they might be worth.
“1939 was the golden age of films. That year, they created one of my all-time favorites, The Wizard of Oz,” Kathleen said. “The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved films based on the books by Frank Baum. These swords belonged to the guards of the Wicked Witch of the West, and they actually were called Winkies.”
“I purchased these swords from The Wizard of Oz movie from an auction company in California,” the man said. “I paid $595 for them back in 1984.”
According to Kathleen, the costume designer created the spears as part of the costumes, not just as props for the movie. She said there are about 15 of the Winkies in existence, but it’s hard to know how many actual spears exist. She also said MGM Studios had their own auctions where they sold off iconic items, such as the Ruby Slippers.
What Are The Wizard Of Oz Props Worth?
That is when Kathleen dropped the big news on the man. She said one of the Winkies sold in an auction in the late 1990s for $7,500. Those prizes are higher now. She said one could sell in an auction now for about $15,000, so two would bring in over $30,000.
The man was in shock on Antiques Roadshow, saying it was “excellent” news. This is especially true since he only paid $595 for them in 1984.
There has been a lot of items that have shocking values based on what the people originally paid for them on the PBS reality TV show. An old gambling wheel was found to be worth about $4,000. A ring a woman paid $30 for was found to be worth up to $30,000. An heirloom passed down to another woman was worth $340,000.
