‘American Idol’ Fans Livid Over Kayko & Abby Blake Shocking Twist
American Idol fans are fuming after a decision the judges made this week. Sam Kelly-Cohen, also known as Kayko, advanced to the Showstopper round. While viewers are happy for him, they can’t get over what the judges did to his best friend. Keep reading to see why they are so upset.
Kayko’s American Idol Journey Is An ‘Accident’
Kayko auditioned for American Idol with his best friend, Abby Blake. Originally, he set out to play the piano accompaniment for his friend, but the judges asked him to sing something for them. He sang an original song called “Time Of Your Life.”
Even though he wasn’t there to audition for the competition, he wound up being offered the chance to go to Hollywood. He was in disbelief when Katy Perry offered him a Golden Ticket, asking if he wanted to go to Hollywood along with his friend.
This week, both Abby and Kayko had to perform again for their chance to continue on American Idol. Kayko sang another original tune called “What If?” He said he wrote the song about his audition and the imposter syndrome he is experiencing now that he’s in Hollywood.
The performance brought Katy Perry to tears and Kayko wound up receiving a standing ovation. Katy told him, “You’re not the accident, you’re the opportunity.” Luke Bryan also offered the singer-songwriter praise, “We’re so glad you took a chance.”
Judges Choose Kayko Over Abby Blake
Unfortunately, Abby was eliminated during Hollywood Week. She sang “Vienna” by Billy Joel and was extremely nervous. Katy Perry stated that her nerves “got the best” of the singer’s vibrato. However, she said it was a “step up” from Abby’s audition.
Although she improved during Hollywood Week, the judges wound up choosing Kayko over Abby. Viewers were livid over the decision.
Several people got online and aired their grievances, pointing out that Kayko was only on American Idol because of Abby. Katy Perry pushed him to sing and that’s the only reason he made it to Hollywood, to begin with.
One viewer took to social media to write, “How awful that Abby got cut and her friend who wasn’t even auditioning got to stay.” Another person agreed, “Abby was so good! WTF!!!!!” A third person commented, “Abby!!! American Idol that is wild your friend got in and not you.”
Although fans are angry, there don’t seem to be any hard feelings between the two friends. Abby said, “Kayko has really just been blowing me away. He completely deserves to be here along with everybody else.”
American Idol Season 22 airs on Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. EST. The latest episodes are also available to stream on Hulu the next day.
