Dr. Phil McGraw Back With New Talk Show Amid Cancellation
Dr. Phil is coming back to television. After 21 years on the air, Dr. Phil ended and it seemed like the 73-year-old TV host planned to ride off into the sunset. However, that is not the case. Phil McGraw is not finished yet and he has a brand-new show coming soon.
Here is what you need to know about the new Dr. Phil show, including where it will air and when it will premiere.
Dr. Phil returning with a new nighttime talk show
Dr. Phil is returning to TV with a new show that will premiere in 2024. However, for fans who got used to Phil McGraw being on their televisions during the daytime hours, this new show will be very different. The new show is called Dr. Phil Primetime and it will be a nightly show on a brand-new television cable TV network.
Deadline reports that Dr. Phil Primetime will premiere on February 26, 2024, and it will air on Merit Street Media. This is a brand-new news and entertainment network coming to cable TV. Phil McGraw is actually helping launch the network and his show will anchor it. There is no news on the distribution, what cable providers will carry the channel, and whether it will be available via streaming. McGraw started Merit Street in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and many of his longtime staffers have relocated there to join him.
While Dr. Phil Primetime will anchor the new network, they plan to release a full primetime lineup, with multiple hours of original daily programming and live news broadcasts. The good news for fans is that his new nighttime talk show will keep mostly the same format as his long-running daytime show. This means Phil McGraw will continue to offer advice and conduct interviews.
“I absolutely love talking to real people about real problems. People who aren’t just complaining but are actively looking for real solutions to better their lives,” McGraw said. He also said he will ensure that these guests are still “real people” dealing with real issues.
Dr. Phil’s main show ended in early 2023
This news comes six months after CBS canceled Dr. Phil. McGraw got his start when he was making special appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and he became so popular that he got his own daytime talk show. It was a massive success, running from September 2002 until May 2023, for an impressive 21 seasons and 3,505 episodes.
However, CBS ended the show when Dr. Phil said he no longer wanted to produce new shows after the 2023 season. The word is that his contract ended in 2023, and he didn’t want to renew it with CBS. The news he is starting his own network explains why he didn’t want a new deal with CBS.
