After 21 seasons on the air, Dr. Phil is coming to an end. The news came with Dr. Phil McGraw talking about the end of the road for his long-running talk show.

Dr. Phil coming to an end in 2023

Variety reported the news that Dr. Phil will end after 21 seasons on the air. It was not CBS who canceled the show and they want to continue airing repeats for the next couple of years. Instead, the decision came when Phil McGraw decided it was time to end the show himself.

Dr. Phil

McGraw released a statement that talked about how “wonderful” his 25 years on television has been. He said he had helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers when it comes to addiction, marriage, mental health, and raising children. “This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”

His talk show will wrap up production at the close of the 2022-23 broadcast season. However, CBS has made it clear they want to keep airing repeats of Dr. Phil throughout the 2023-24 season as well.

The legacy of Dr. Phil

Phil McGraw, 72, made his debut on TV in 1998 when he served as a regular on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He once served as the legal consultant for Winfrey during her publicized Texas beef defamation trial. His repeat appearances on her show ended up extremely popular and he got his own TV show in 2002. Winfrey produced his show.

Ever since Dr. Phil premiered, it has always been one of the top-rated shows on daytime television. Even now, with the show coming to an end, it ranks second to only Live With Kelly and Ryan. McGraw also works in production, as his company executive produced Bull, which was based on his legal consulting firm. That show starred NCIS star Michael Weatherly as a fictional version of McGraw.

There have been several great moments of Dr. Phil throughout history. He has had a girl on the show who claimed she was pregnant with baby Jesus. However, she came to learn she wasn’t pregnant at all. He had women on his show who faked cancer just to get money from fundraisers. It is also hard to forget the man who had the word “Sexy Vegan” tattooed on his forehead after legally changing his name to that.

In 2020, Phil received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
