Kass McQuillen, Survivor Seasons 28 and 31 alumni, recently said on Twitter that she tells people not to apply to the reality competition show.

There are tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of Survivor superfans who would love to compete. Very few actually get the privilege of making it through the whole casting process to eventually hit the beach. But is it really worth it? Some former players aren’t quite so sure every fan should be so eager to realize their dreams. Kass of Survivor: Cambodia and Survivor: Cagayan fame is one of those players.

Do Not Apply

Her comment came in response to a recent tweet from another former player, Karla of Season 43. Karla put out a tweet commenting on the recent slew of “Apply today!” messages from Jeff Probst himself. The messages have been playing around ad breaks throughout Season 44.

Karla seems anxious about the idea of others taking Probst’s advice unaware of the negative side of sudden TV fame. Her tweet showcases many of the terrible comments she received from viewers. Many players throughout the history of the show have had to deal with extreme negative backlash from the public. Many women specifically feel particularly uncomfortable with many of the comments that tend to come their way. But anyone who gets a “villain edit” during their season can be targets for backlash.

Kass is one of those players who certainly got a villainous edit in both of her seasons. It’s not something she shied away from either, quite the contrary. To this day, #chaoskass still adorns her social media bios. She wears it like a badge of honor, as she should because her personality and gameplay style is what made her one of the most iconic players in both of her respective seasons.

That doesn’t mean she has any love for the hate she received, though.

Survivor Backlash

In Cass’s response to Karla’s tweet, she says she tells people not to apply because “it’s not worth it.”

It’s possible that this is true for many prospective applicants. The show itself can be extremely mentally taxing. On top of that, having to deal with slanderous hate coming your way, or even worse, your family’s way, as the result of a TV show may just be too much. It’s safe to say that anyone who sends hate comments or death threats over a game show likely needs more extracurricular activities in their life. There are better ways to spend your time. Frankly, any other way to spend your time is likely more productive.

Hopefully, it’s an issue that future players are better equipped to deal with.
