Sam Champion shares how he got his confidence

On a previous episode of DWTS, the judges complimented Sam Champion’s confidence. This meant a lot to him since he just wants to be himself. On Monday’s broadcast, Sam got emotional as he opened up about his sexuality to his partner Cheryl Burke. He said he never felt comfortable with being a gay man.

When Sam was younger, he prayed that he could make his sexuality go away. The pair discussed this week’s dance. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba previously praised his “confidence” on the ballroom floor. Cheryl asked Sam how he got his confidence.

“I don’t think you have confidence if you don’t have honesty with yourself,” Sam said. “Before I was comfortable with being gay, I prayed that it would go away because my dad had a problem with it. We didn’t talk for two years.”

He shared his dad’s dying words. He told Sam that he was “proud of the man that you became.” Sam got emotional as he shared this story with Cheryl. His friend Robin Roberts admitted that he’s helped her with her confidence as well. She was in Los Angeles to cheer on the weatherman on Dancing with the Stars.

Sam and his partner Cheryl danced the Samba to the song “Los Muertos Vivos Estan,” which is from the James Bond film Spectre soundtrack. This week was Bond Week. Sam and Cheryl almost ended up eliminated until the judges saved him. Actress Cheryl Ladd and pro Louis van Amstel went home.

Robin Roberts gets candid about their connection

In an interview with Extra, Robin Roberts spoke out about her friendship with Sam. She said she was nervous about seeing him end up in the bottom two. Robin said their dance was “beautiful” and that she “had tears in my eyes.” She joked that she’s seen Sam dance before and that Cheryl had a lot of work cut out for her.

Robin was then asked about their friendship. She admitted that Sam has given her the confidence to come out as a gay woman. For many years, Robin wanted to keep her relationship with Amber Laign private.

“Sam helped me to be more public about this woman right here,” Robin Roberts said, referring to her girlfriend.
