Jelly Roll spent years as a struggling artist trying to catch his big break. He finally went mainstream in 2022 with his hit songs “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor.” His breakthrough came in 2020 with the song “Save Me” and his transition from rap to country music.
However, the popular singer from Antioch, Tennessee, wants to help the next generation of up-and-coming performers. He previously served as a mentor on Season 22 of American Idol. Now he gets another chance at shaping careers in the music industry. Jelly Roll was named as one of the judges for Netflix’s upcoming reboot of a popular talent show.
Star Search originally aired from 1983 until 1995 with host Ed McMahon. A 2003 reboot with Arsenio Hall only lasted one season on CBS. Now, Netflix has announced plans months ago for another reboot, but only shared more details this week.
Model Chrissy Teigen and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar join Jelly Roll as the judges. Grown-ish actor Anthony Anderson serves as the host of the Star Search reboot.
Talent Competition Features Live Voting
The original Star Search helped launch the careers of some of the biggest celebrities today, including Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears. The talent competition also gave platforms to comedians Dave Chappelle and Adam Sandler. Yet, Netflix made some changes to keep the reboot fresh.
The limited competition series is only slated for an initial 5-week run. Episodes will air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays on the streaming service. Viewers who watch on mobile devices have the chance to vote for their favorite contestants in real time. They can also cast a vote on their television remote.
Netflix will reveal more specific voting details in the coming weeks. Star Search premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, January 20.
Jelly Roll Takes A Backseat To Another Judge
Jelly Roll is definitely having a moment, especially with his recent turn as a magazine cover model. However, his popularity is nowhere near that of another judge.

Sarah Michelle Gellar famously starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven seasons and is attached to star in the upcoming Hulu reboot. The actress also had a role in the 2025 I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
