Michigan Man Set To Be Sentenced For Sex Crime Then Shoots 3 Of His Kids
A father in Michigan is set to face a murder trial and assault charges in connection with the shooting of three of his children. The incident also reportedly took place on the morning he was scheduled to face a sex-crime conviction. The family has also since spoken out over the story.
A Member Of The Family Shared, ‘It Doesn’t Make Sense’
Jeff Smerer had been convicted of exposing his genitals to a child at a family’s daycare from 2020 to 2023. This year, he had pled guilty to a charge of indecent exposure relating to the incident.
On September 11, Jeff was scheduled to face a conviction for the sex crime. However, the morning ended up taking a deadly turn.
Speaking with ABC 7, a family member shared that Jeff “woke up, woke the kids up to go to school and you know, it was a regular day, and something just happened. It doesn’t make sense.”
The Family Has Since Set Up A GoFundMe For Help
Jeff then reportedly shot three of his children. The oldest, his 17-year-old Kayleb, was killed. The two younger children, 13-year-old son Bentley and 12-year-old daughter Kinzely, survived. They were taken to hospitals in the Detroit area.
The family explained Jeff was facing medical and financial issues at the time. As they shared, “He had a stroke then he started having seizures after that. And that’s why he ended up losing his job.”
Huron police were notified of reports of the shooting around 6 AM local time, where they found the three children. According to WPHM, Jeff then tried to take his own life. However, his wife and their 20-year-old son intervened.
Since then, Jeff has been charged with open murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and various counts of felony firearm use, as shared by Port Huron Times Herald. As noted by CBS Detroit, he was denied bond during an arraignment after appearing in court through Zoom. He was also described as being out on bond for indecent exposure at the time of the shooting.
The family has also shared updates over the story with a GoFundMe account. Through it, the family hopes to raise funds for Kayleb’s funeral and medical aid for the surviving children.
In Spite Of The Tragedy, The Family Shared That They Still Hold ‘On To Hope’
In a statement, the family shared, “A mother has lost her 17-year-old child in a tragic event. Her 13-year-old son is fighting for recovery with severe injuries to his face, including shattered cheekbones, upper jaw, and nasal area, but is currently breathing on his own.”
“Her 12-year-old daughter, who loved volleyball and dance, will have to [undergo] facial reconstruction surgery and is now paralyzed from the shoulders down. Despite the doctors’ dire prognosis, the family holds on to hope.”
