Oklahoma Woman Loses Arms & Legs After Pit Bull Attack

Oklahoma Woman Attacked By Pit Bulls While Riding Bike
Many pit bull owners swear that their dogs are friendly, but like all dogs, the breed can be unpredictable. Pit bulls have a long reputation as aggressive and dangerous. While public perception of the breed has softened, cases like what happened in Oklahoma only reinforce the fear many people have toward pit bulls.
Okmulgee, Oklahoma, is located about 40 miles south of Tulsa. A woman and her boyfriend went for a relaxing bike ride on September 9. The bike ride turned into a horrible nightmare for the woman, identified as Janelle “Nellie” Scott.
She was attacked by a friend’s two vicious pit bulls. Her boyfriend tried to protect her from the animals, but she sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack. According to PEOPLE magazine, one of the dogs was killed by the woman’s boyfriend during the incident.
Where did the animals come from? The police told the local news that the dogs likely got loose during the night. “There is an RV-type trailer located in this area, and it is reported that the dog(s) were kept within this trailer. This trailer had reportedly been broken into at some point in the evening, which may have released the animals from confinement,” the police said.
Loses Arms & Legs, Faces Long Recovery
Danger truly lurks around every corner. Not even squirrels are safe to be around. But people should be able to enjoy a simple bike ride without nearly losing their lives. By the time the police arrived, the Oklahoma woman was already severely injured.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she remains nearly a month after the attack happened. Her cousin created a GoFundMe to help the woman’s family with the financial burden.
According to the GoFundMe, Janelle “Nellie” Scott had one arm and leg amputated immediately following the attack. In several updates, the family member revealed that the victim had to go back into surgery to partially amputate the other arm and leg.
“Nellie had to have more of her right arm amputated and might have to have more of her left leg amputated tomorrow,” the latest update from yesterday shared.
The victim’s cousin thanked the person who anonymously sent a card and flowers. They also thanked the many donations and gift cards the family had received. The GoFundMe has raised over $17,000 so far and is close to the $18,000 goal.
“Remember, we’re strong women, and we’re going to beat this,” Janelle Scott’s mother Cheryl told the media.
