2 California Residents ‘Almost Killed’ & Mauled In Bloody Squirrel Attacks
While people know to be cautious around wild animals, people generally think of squirrels as more of a nuisance at worst and harmless at best. However, people in San Rafael, California, are being warned of reports about a squirrel attacking locals. According to reports, the squirrel has even put people in the hospital, proving to be quite dangerous.
A Few California Residents Recounted Their Experiences With The Squirrel Attacks, Even Sharing Their Wounds
Residents of San Rafael, which is north of San Francisco, have been growing concerned after a local squirrel has reportedly been attacking people. According to some reports, some of those attacked ended up in the emergency room.
Recently, a pair of neighbors in the area shared a personal account of the attack. According to them, the small animal managed to commit a substantial amount of damage.

As shared with ABC7, one local, Joan Heblack, claimed to have been attacked by the squirrel during a morning walk. She shared, “It clamped onto my leg. The tail was flying up here. I was like, ‘Get it off me, get off me!’ I didn’t want to touch it.”
The squirrel was small, but still did substantial damage to her leg, sinking its claws into her skin. Recounting what happened, she described the situation as “very scary.”
One Victim’s Niece Was Surprised By The Amount Of Damage A Squirrel’s Claws Can Do, Especially The Blood
Another resident, Isabel Campoy, claimed that she and her niece, Carmen, were also attacked by the squirrel in the same area. She shared, “This is beautiful, now it’s following us, until she almost killed me.”
Campoy’s arm was covered in multiple gashes. She claimed, “[The] squirrel went from the floor tried to jump up to my face, I tried to protect my face, my arm was completely overcome by [the] squirrel. Finally, it jumped off, by then I was full of blood. I [ran] to the emergency room.” Carmen also noted that she herself was surprised by the amount of blood caused by the squirrel.

WildCare’s Vanessa Potter also spoke with the outlet. She noted that unprovoked attacks aren’t “unheard of.” She also shared the belief that rabies are likely not a factor.
Potter continued, “If they associate people with food, they’re not afraid of them. They will look for food. If they don’t get it, there can be frustrations. They can be territorial of their space.”
There have been at least five attacks reported in connection to the animal. The same squirrel, described as “gold-brown” is believed to be responsible for all of the attacks.
Flyers have also been plastered around the area to warn people. As they read, “THIS IS NOT A JOKE.”
