Upon emergency crews arriving at the scene, they found a young boy, 3, seriously injured after falling off a moving lawnmower. Witnesses at the scene revealed that a family member was operating an industrial lawnmower that is operated by standing upright on. Cohen Liggett, 3, either fell or jumped off when the family member was backing the lawnmower up.

The young boy’s legs were run over, causing massive blood loss. A neighbor applied a makeshift tourniquet until help arrived.

The boy is reportedly in the hospital in critical but stable condition. The doctors are reportedly treating a severe wound to the young boy’s leg. He’s expected to need at least one surgery on the injury.

County Sheriff Issues Stark Warning

According to studies, lawnmowers cause over 25k injuries and nearly 100 deaths in the U.S. every year. One of the responders to the tragedy in Illinois, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, issued a stark warning to parents.

“Children should never ride on them, whether operating or as a passenger with an adult. This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of keeping children away from mowers at all times,” he advised.

Tragedy Comes Amid Younger Brother’s Health Issues

A Cary resident shared with the local news that Cohen Liggett’s younger brother, Reed, has also been facing serious health issues. He reportedly had three surgeries for an issue with his colon and was hospitalized several times.

The source shared that the young boy was finally diagnosed with the rare condition mast cell activation syndrome, which causes food and environmental allergies. The family is in serious financial straits amid the ongoing health problems of their children.

A GoFundMe has raised over $35,000 for the family. “The Liggett family is heartbroken but holding onto hope. They are asking, first and foremost, for your prayers — for Cohen’s complete healing, for strength and peace during this unimaginable time, and for wisdom for the medical team as they make critical decisions for Cohen’s future,” the GoFundMe states.

The injury to the young boy makes you think twice about lawnmower safety.
