Texas Man Kills Baby For ‘Quality Time’ With Wife
Murder isn’t anything new, but sometimes it is truly shocking. It is especially hard to understand when it involves a young baby or a senior citizen. A Texas community was shaken in 2022 when a man and his wife were arrested for the murder of their newborn baby.
The two-month-old baby, Athena, died after being drugged by her parents. Adam Canales Jr., 33, and Sarah Canales, 25, were arrested on charges of manslaughter after the death of their daughter. Athene was found unresponsive in 2021 after being put down for a nap by her father. Her mother wasn’t home at the time the baby was found dead.

The cause of death was later revealed as “mixed drug toxicity.” An autopsy discovered that the baby overdosed on a combination of drugs found in Benadryl and Nyquil, the Lubbock-Avalanche Journal reported.
Neither of the over-the-counter medicines is approved for children under 4.
Admitted To Drugging Baby Before To Do ‘Grown-Up Things
Adam Canales Jr. and his wife initially denied giving their baby daughter any medicine or drugs. The autopsy report proved otherwise. After the autopsy was shared with the parents, they both made shocking confessions about their daughter.
The baby, just two months old, was drugged several times to get her to sleep. The baby reportedly suffered from colic and was up all night crying.
However, her father admitted to previously giving the baby Benadryl so he could do “grown-up things” with his wife. When interview by the police, Canales’ mother revealed that she saw the couple drugging their other two children to get them to sleep on several occasions.

The couple also admitted to being told by a doctor not to give the child Benadryl.
The prosecutor called the parents out during the father’s trial. “This defendant was so selfish and reckless in his actions that he caused the death of Athena. They made a habit of giving their kids, including Athena, medicine to make them sleep. When they were tired and just wanted adult time to themselves — they dosed her.”
Adam Canales Jr.’s lawyer deemed the death of the baby “accidental” and stated that he didn’t know the baby would die from the medicine.
The baby’s father was convicted of manslaughter on August 28 for Athena’s death. The baby’s mother, Sarah Canales, will face trial next.
The shocking case of parents killing their child is unfortunately too common.
