Daisy Kent Helped ‘Golden Bachelor’ Star Through Health Crisis
A Golden Bachelor star opened up for the first time about a shocking health diagnosis she never addressed on the show. Plus, she revealed how Daisy Kent helped her accept her health issues. Keep reading to learn more about the situation.
Golden Bachelor Star Reveals Health Issue
Nancy Hulkower was one of the most popular contestants on Season 1 of The Golden Bachelor. She left the show early in the season after realizing she wasn’t connecting with Gerry Turner the way the other women were.
Her connection to the 72-year-old retiree may have been lacking but she developed a strong bond with fellow contestants Kathy Swarts and Susan Noles. Nancy was a guest on the pair’s new Bachelor Happy Hour: Golden Hour podcast this week.
Nancy Hulkower shared a health issue that she kept from viewers. She told Susan and Kathy that the producers knew, but she didn’t want to address it on the show.
The reality star has Type 1 diabetes, which she takes insulin for. The diagnosis came as a shock. The Golden lady further revealed that it did have a negative effect on her love life, which might explain why she never spoke about it on the show.
“I unfortunately have someone that I dated briefly who said, ‘I’m not interested in dating anyone who has any chronic health issues.’ My point to that is I’m 61 and as we all get older and continue to get older, more things will happen,” she vulnerably shared.
She added, “There’s nothing I can do about that, but I manage it. I can live a great life. I can ski, I do Pilates, I manage my diabetes.”
However, she wasn’t always so accepting about her health issues. How did Daisy Kent help her accept her diagnosis?
How Daisy Kent Inspired Her To Accept Diagnosis
Daisy Kent was a contestant on Season 28 of The Bachelor. She made it all the way to the final two before self-eliminating for similar reasons Nancy left The Golden Bachelor. Joey Graziadei went on to propose to Kelsey Anderson.
Daisy gained fans after vulnerably opening up about her battle with Lyme disease and hearing loss. She wears a cochlear implant to help her hear.
The inspiring story helped Nancy Hulkower accept her own medical diagnosis, “I was always afraid to put it out there and it was truly Daisy who gave me the confidence to move forward and be open about having diabetes,” Nancy told Susan and Kathy.
She continued, “Because of her, I’m also getting a small pump that I’ll wear on my arm or my leg, which is no big deal. It makes managing diabetes even easier.”

Daisy Kent has inspired me to explore potentially creating a nonprofit for an illness I once had to help other women still battling the same disease, raise more awareness, and improve research. Like Daisy, I’ve also written a book (Diagnosis Detective: Curing Granulomatous Mastitis) about my survivorship, and hopes to help other patients, and doctors, around the world. Stay tuned!
