At the end of Welcome To Plathville Season 5, Ethan and Olivia Plath officially gave up the ghost of their hollow marriage. Undoubtedly, the show followed many of the couple’s relationship troubles throughout the first five seasons. Oftentimes, the two couldn’t agree on the foundational elements of their marriage. Admittedly, Olivia discusses how the marriage was a constant battle between them.

Ethan And Olivia Plath’s Marriage Was A Full Blown Battle

During Welcome To Plathville‘s Season 5, Ethan and Olivia Plath explored options to continue their marriage. However, by the finale, it was clear the young couple were ready to call it quits. Unfortunately, both were raised in very controlling environments. When they began their marriage on their own it was a race to learn about themselves, marriage, and the world all at once. Additionally, a huge factor in their battle was it was airing for the world to see. While on camera, the two fought over essential issues like basic communication, religion, and politics. Although couples don’t have to agree on everything, they need to find a level of mutual respect for the other’s views. Instead, Ethan and Olivia were increasingly more divided. Ultimately, they didn’t believe they could raise children together with such polar differences.

Ethan And Olivia Plath’s Separation Makes Way For New Perspectives

Although the couple’s official divorce filing was in February 2024, they have been living separately since February 25, 2023. Since the separation, Olivia Plath has gained space and perspective. While reflecting on her time on Welcome To Plathville she recalls there was a huge “power struggle” between her and Kim Plath. Admittedly, Olivia was surprised by the comments at the time. She tells Teen Vogue, “I would read critical comments [about me on the show] and I would immediately respond to that, like ‘no, I’m not the same [as Kim], you don’t understand.’” Furthermore, adding to her enlightenment she says, “Looking back on it now, all I wanted was to choose my own life. All I wanted was to be myself and live authentically as who I am.”

“I look back on the last four or five seasons of the show, which is four or five years of my life, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, who is that kid who cries in every single interview and is so emotional? What is her problem?’” she revisits. But Olivia Plath can see why she and Ethan were constantly battling. “I was 20 and newly married to someone who wasn’t ready to leave fundamentalism behind at the same time as I was questioning fundamentalism.”

Deconstruction Requires Breathing Room

Acknowledging how being on camera with Welcome To Plathville truly affects her, she discusses the toll it took. She expresses, “I had my whole life open for the public to criticize and critique, and I was a kid who grew up so sheltered from the world.” Discussing growing up and navigating difficult situations on screen, Olivia gives herself some grace. Saying, “To be thrown out in it and have everyone watch me as I’m deconstructing and trying to figure out what being married is all about and dealing with in-law conflict. I look back and I’m like, sheesh. It felt very overwhelming.”

Olivia Plath Reflects On Her Way Of Handling The Relationships On The Show

Unmistakably, Olivia Plath recognizes her way of dealing with the issues wasn’t the best. She says, “I’m trying to sit in this place now, realizing that I should’ve behaved better, and also knowing that I did not have the tools at the time to behave better.” Continuing, “It’s the juxtaposition of, that was a bad choice; I didn’t know how at the time, but now I do.” However, she recognizes her flaws and wants to grow from them. “I look back to season one and see a scared kid who felt like she was backed into a corner.” Understanding in hindsight, “I saw things as black and white and drew very harsh boundaries. I think that I needed that at the time. It harmed other people and… I wish that wasn’t the case, but I don’t get a do-over. I want to consistently make better choices.”

Currently, Olivia says, “I feel very at home with myself.” Furthermore, her new approach is, “I think curiosity is the theme of my life.”
