‘DWTS’ Derek Hough’s Family Suffers Tragic Loss
While many around the world celebrate the Easter holiday, Derek Hough and his family are mourning the loss of a beloved family member.
The past 12 months have been particularly difficult for the family. Derek’s maternal grandfather passed away in March 2023. And then in December, Derek’s wife Hayley Erbert suffered a cranial hematoma that required emergency surgery. Thankfully, Hayley survived and Derek believes she will dance again one day.

Derek Hough & Family Honor Their Fallen Family Member
Saying goodbye to a loved one is never easy. Derek Hough’s bond with his family members is incredibly strong and he’s feeling this loss particularly hard.
Today, the 38-year-old shared on social media they lost his beloved grandmother.
“Losing Grandma feels like losing a part of our family’s soul. She was the one with endless stories, each one teaching us something new or just making us double over with laughter. Her stories were almost unbelievable, igniting our imaginations,” Derek shared on Instagram. He attached several photos of his grandmother spending time with the family. “Her love was the kind that made you feel seen, heard, and valued, no matter what.”
Derek’s mother Marriann Hough confirmed on her own social media that it was her mother that passed away.
“As we say goodbye, I’m reminded of all the beautiful moments we shared, and somehow, it feels like she’s still here, guiding us, loving us,” the DWTS judge continued. “Grandma, you’ve given us so much to remember, to cherish, and to pass on. We miss you terribly, but we’re grateful for every second we got to spend with you. So long… for now you little stinker.
You’ll always be in our hearts, making us smile. We love you.”

DWTS Fans Lift Up The Hough Family During This Difficult Chapter
Fans lifted Derek and the rest of the Hough family up amid the tragedy. Well-wishes for the family flooded in on his post. Many expressed sadness for the family amid the Easter holidays.
