Tensions Between Wendy Williams & Ellen DeGeneres
A few years ago, Wendy Williams threw shade at Ellen DeGeneres when she came out and denied knowing about a toxic work environment at her studio. There were a number of accusations made that labeled The Ellen Show as toxic.
As a result, Ellen DeGeneres retired from daytime television, even though she denied that the allegations were true. At the time, she said that the rumors were “orchestrated.” Nonetheless, she felt it was time to hang it up and leave the show.
Wendy Williams let it be known that she wasn’t buying Ellen’s story. She pointed out that her own experience as a guest on The Ellen Show was not a positive one. Wendy had appeared on the daytime talk show several times, but the chemistry between the two women was always off. Fans think they have uncovered the reason why.
A Reddit user posted a clip in a Wendy Williams subreddit that may explain the beef. Wendy approached Portia de Rossi, who is now Ellen’s wife, during a press event.
The original poster wrote, “Wendy outing Portia de Rossi when she was still in the closet (2004). That explains the awkward tension Ellen and Wendy always had!”
Fans Divided On Wendy & Ellen Drama
Wendy fans were quick to weigh in on the matter. Many people pointed out that the photo of Portia and a woman had been published in a magazine prior to Wendy Williams approaching her on the subject. So, technically the magazine outed Portia de Rossi.
While many fans defended Wendy in this instance, several people still found her asking Portia about the photos to be distasteful and wrong.
“But the pics were already out? Wendy asked her about it but didn’t say anything that wasn’t already out there so I don’t think she’s to blame,” one person commented.

Another Reddit user responded writing, “Are you kidding? So do you think it’s ok to ask someone about their sexuality in a public forum when they are very obviously not openly gay?”
They continued, pointing out that it was a time when being gay was not “as accepted in the industry (and just in general) as it is today.” The person also noted that Portia did not consent to the photos being taken and it was during a private moment.
“Wendy was very clearly going for a ‘gotcha’ moment about something she knew was private and sensitive and potentially damaging. I love Wendy and think she is hilarious, but this is shitty behavior and anyone saying otherwise is delusional,” they concluded.
