Reality television shows are constantly changing. Networks and producers are always trying new things to make their shows fresh and relevant.  This is normally a good thing for the fans of reality television. However, in the case of Survivor, it is not something fans are happy about. The changes in this CBS megahit television show have fans wondering if Survivor is still a reality competition show or if it has now become a soap opera. Fans are displeased, to say the very least.

Too Many Backstories

Fans are not happy there are so many backstories. It appears Survivor fans are not as interested in the contestants and their lives outside the show. They want to see more of the competitions.

With the change in the format of Survivor, there aren’t as many competitions as there have been in the past. Before this formatting change, there was both a reward challenge and an immunity challenge before each tribal council. Now, instead of having both challenges, the reward challenge and immunity challenge have been combined into one challenge.

There Is No Crying On Survivor?

Survivor fans are not happy about all the crying that is taking place this season. One contestant in particular, Bhanu Gopa, is rubbing the fans the wrong way. Bhanu Gopa is an Indian IT professional who turns on the tears at the drop of a hat. It is difficult for Gopa to last more than a few minutes without turning on the water works.

“There is no crying in #Survivor,” a fan of the show shared on social media.

There has always been some crying on Survivor. It is fair to say there was crying when Johnny Fairplay’s grandmother “died.” Who can forget Tai Trang and all his tears? This season, however, Survivor fans are not happy with all the crying and whining.

Survivor  Fans Are Not Happy

Fans of the reality television competition show are not the least bit happy with how the current season is going. They have taken to the different social media outlets to voice their displeasure about the direction this season is currently taking.

With fewer competitions, more crying and more whining, Survivor appears to have changed from a competition reality television show into a soap opera. Their opinions may change when (or if) Bhanu Gopa is voted off. The majority of the current complaints about Survivor are centered around this one contestant who appears to be the resident crybaby.

Of course, fans of the show aren’t happy with the new format either. That can not change this season. However, if fans continue to voice their issues, the format could go back to the way it use to be.

Tell us what you think. Is Survivor becoming a soap opera? Do you think there is there more crying this season than in season past? What do you think of knowing the contestants’ backstories? Should CBS go back to the way Survivor was before? Sound off in the comment section below.

  1. It seems that the “social experiment” part of the game has taken over and the actual competition portion, has been pushed to the background. Gameplay/physical competition, should be the priority. It’s not nearly as interesting and exciting as it used to be, in my humble opinion.

  2. It is on longer – but less Survivor. More drama (who cares??) longer commercials, less challenges. We need to see them sitting at camp chatting. WE know who doesn’t like who, it does not need to be spelled out. We love to see challenges, but why only one. Then it is too much personal stuff – too much crying. Bring back the old routine. Show us that they are eating – whatever and fishing. Life at camp but not indepth stories about anything.
We put it together. We want to see idol hunting… Thanks for being aware that we are not happy. Don’t break Survivor.

    1. You’re not kidding about the commercials, the last 90 minute show there was 26 minutes of commercials.

  3. The crying has got to STOP!!! And, same old, same old puzzles all the time. Way too much dialog the first 30 to 45 minutes!!!!

  4. I enjoy the competitions and the struggles. This is what made SURVIVOR great! We should learn about their background as they share it with their peers. They seem to have several changes of clothes. The struggles made the show interesting and the desire to tune in week after week.

  5. Show us a little about the people, but more about how they are actually surviving, the elements, lack of food, loneliness, strategizing etc. Go back to the more challenging competitions, less puzzles. It’s become so predictable people are making their own puzzles at home for practice.

  6. All these reality shows are focused way too much on the backstory of the people. We don’t care that much about their story. We want to see how they survive on survivor. More comps, more strategy, more action, Go way back to the first episodes and take it from there!!!! And yes too many commercials!
