The actor recently opened up about his harrowing ordeal following his tumultuous split with longtime partner, Tori Spelling.

Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling are not exactly strangers when it comes to drama. Throughout the couple’s entire relationship, there have been plenty of occurrences that would’ve fit right in on Beverly Hills 90210. In fact, McDermott and Spelling’s relationship started with a scandal. Spelling has admitted that she cheated on ex-husband Charlie Shanian with McDermott in 2005. From there, the couple’s relationship only became more complicated.

In 2013, McDermott was caught having an affair while he was filming the cooking competition show Chopped Canada. However, after working through their issues, their relationship continued to hold together. Eventually, the complications finally took their toll on the couple. Earlier this year, McDermott announced that he and Spelling were no longer together.

Dean McDermott’s Harrowing Account

In a November 16 interview with the Daily Mail, McDermott revealed the aftermath of his announcement. “My worst memory with Tori is that last fight when I was drunk and angry. It was the night that I raged against her and the children and I saw the light, the final flicker of the flame go out in her eyes,” he told the Daily Mail. “I posted that because I was at the end of my rope, I didn’t know what to do. I had burned everything down yet again.”

In an Instagram post that has since been deleted, McDermott announced his split with Spelling. “It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways and start a new journey of our own. We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time.”

The post came to the surprise of many, including Spelling. For McDermott, he turned to drugs and alcohol to help him through the pain. That decision nearly cost the actor his life. “I was literally at my wit’s end. That night, I was drinking, and I was into my pills,” McDermott told the Daily Mail. “After I sent the post, I took some more pills, and I took six or seven Ambien in the hopes that I would not wake up.” McDermott admits that had his suicide attempt been successful, he “would’ve ruined so many lives” that night.

The Details Behind McDermott’s Substance Abuse Problem

To McDermott, his suicide attempt was a cry for help during a desperate situation. “It wasn’t the right way to do it, but it got people’s attention. The people I needed it to. It fell in the ears of people I wanted it to fall into,” he added. “I was so full of shame and it was such a horrible idea. And then my kids were really, really hurt.”

As McDermott deals with the extent of his abuse issues, he reflects on the pain that he caused to his family. “Alcohol made me feel good enough. I started feeling good enough until it got to a point where it didn’t. It ended up in isolation. It ended up with me drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of narcos by myself with a beautiful family in the other room. That’s what led to the brokenness and to what happened between me and Tori,” he told the Daily Mail.  “I couldn’t do it anymore, I couldn’t live that life anymore. I was tired of the anger and the yelling.”
