This has been a big week for fans of the Kevin Costner-led series Yellowstone. Although the SAG-AFTRA strike has not been resolved, Paramount has boldly announced a premiere date for Season 5, Part 2.

However, Kevin was fired from the series in the spring. Is there any chance that fences could be mended and he could return to reprise his award-winning role as John Dutton?

Is Kevin Costner Returning For Remainder Of Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2?

On Thursday, Deadline reported that Paramount has set a premiere date for Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2. However, Paramount did not state whether or not Kevin Costner was returning to play John Dutton.

But, writer Nellie Andreeva reports “I hear that it is possible for him to be in Yellowstone’s final episodes.”

In other words, this was not a real confirmation, but a possibility. Kevin could potentially be back on the ranch one last time. It should be noted that the Field Of Dreams star is still listed as an Executive Producer of the series.

Didn’t Paramount Fire Kevin Costner From Yellowstone?

There has been a lot of doubt about Kevin Costner’s return ever since the February reports of chaos on the Paramount set. Kevin’s availability was very limited because of his Horizon filming schedule. This is a four-movie passion project that Kevin sunk big bucks into.

Thanks to the worldwide pandemic, filming for Yellowstone Season 5 was delayed. This overlapped with Kevin’s filming schedule. Therefore, he would not budge about the amount of time he was available to film the remainder of the supersized Season 5.

By May, Paramount reported that the Taylor Sheridan series would end with Season 5. Also, it appeared that Kevin was not going to return to the series.

Then, thanks to Kevin’s messy Hollywood divorce, it was discovered over the summer that he was negotiating Seasons 6 and 7. That did not sound like he was fired! But, ultimately he shared under testimony in divorce court that he was no longer in the series. Also, he mentioned that he was going to need to sue Paramount for the remainder of Season 5.

The rumors from unnamed Paramount executives indicated that he was not returning. However, this seems to be part of their mercurial negotiations. It does not serve them to not have their lead in the final episodes. Also, there may be a legal reason why Kevin needs to be back.

The John Dutton Death Contract Clause

One ace that Kevin Costner has in his negotiating cards is that he has a “moral death” provision in his contract. That means he can nix ideas that he finds unsatisfactory. He could reject how Taylor Sheridan kills off John Dutton.

Paramount–and Taylor Sheridan–may find it more satisfactory to bring Kevin back and properly finish off this hugely successful series.

When Will Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 Premiere?

Paramount will premiere Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 in November 2024. This is, of course, assuming that the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved in time to produce these episodes.
