‘The Little Couple’ Jen Arnold Cringes Over ‘Midget’ & ‘Munchkin’, What Happened?
The Little Couple arrived on TLC long after Little People, Big World which Matt Roloff used to try and promote awareness about dwarfism. 7 Little Johnstons also helped with that, and Trent and Amber Johnston do their bit to school TLC fans about it. In 2023, soon after Jen Arnold did the same thing, she felt offended by someone who referred to her as a “munchkin,” akin to calling her a midget.
The Little Couple Jen Arnold’s Effort On Schooling About Dwarfism
Ahead of Dwarfism Awareness Month, the mom of Will and Zoey Klein took to social media and shared a long write-up about little people. In her post, she explained some of the more offensive words that people use to describe those who are smaller than average. One word that she really focused on was “Midget.” She said, “The word “midget” is considered highly offensive.”
The Little Couple star had previously spoken out about dwarfism and how there’s still not enough inclusivity for little people. For example, she encountered a problem trying to get a pedicure done. However, there was no elevator, so she couldn’t get there. Plus, they had the cheek to charge her a cancellation fee. Actually, her anecdotes help to raise awareness any time of the year, and not just during Dwarfism Awareness Month.
The Little Couple Jen Arnold Laments lack Of Awareness
Despite so much education, some folks still miss the point that little people are humans just like everyone else. Even Peter Dinklage was shocked when Disney announced the remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Trent and Amber Johnston shared the story about him saying, “You’re still making that f—— backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f— are you doing, man?” And he lamented the lack of education. Now, Jen Arnold did the same thing
On November 1, Jen Arnold took to her Instagram and told a story that made The Little Couple alum cringe. In her caption, she said “When you board the plane and the flight attendant says, “Have you ever been to Chittenango NY? They have an amazing celebration of The Wizard of Oz with a parade every year with all the munchkins. You’d love it.” Day 1 after #Dwarfism #Awareness Month 💚.”
What Is A Munchkin?
The Little Couple mom didn’t specifically mention “munchkin” as an offensive term three days ago. However, it does refer to very little people. So, calling a little person a “munchkin” is very much the same as calling them “midgets.”
Amy Roloff, who also has dwarfism and grandchildren with the condition joined the conversation. She said, to her fellow TLC colleague, “Oh dear. Still amazes me what some adults do and say in this day. Sorry you had to deal with that in public.”
Jen replied, saying, “And yes, she was clearly a lovely well intended person ❤️ Hopefully just being in the room helps to raise awareness.”
