If The Actors Strike, Will Daytime Soaps Still Be In Production?
There is an impending SAG-AFTRA strike. Actors could go on strike soon, just like the writers with the WGA strike. Should fans of daytime soaps like Young And The Restless, Days Of Our Lives, Bold And The Beautiful, and General Hospital be concerned that their shows will be shut down?
Here is the latest update on what will happen to soaps if the actors do go on strike at the end of June.
Will Daytime Soaps Still Be In Production If The Actors Go On Strike?
Fans of daytime soaps may be a little bit nervous right now with the talk of the impending SAG-AFRTA strike. Actors have overwhelmingly voted to go on strike on June 30. Does that mean favorite soaps like General Hospital to be off the air soon?
According to Deadline, soap fans can breathe easier. That is because they are “employed under the SAG-AFTRA National Code of Fair Practice For Network Television Broadcasting (aka Network Code). Essentially, they have a different collective bargaining agreement. This agreement not only affects soaps, but also talk shows like The View, variety, reality, morning shows like GMA, game shows, sports, and more.
Therefore, even if the actors go on strike, soaps will remain in production. In addition, their contract does not expire until July 2024.
How Far Ahead Are Soaps?
Another reason that fans of soaps should breathe a sigh of relief is that all soaps are ahead of schedule. The publication cites the example that Days Of Our Lives is six months ahead of schedule. That means that there will be no disruption of the Peacock soap opera should there be a pandemic or work stoppage.
Also, three of the four soaps go on summer hiatus soon. Only The Young And The Restless does not. General Hospital and The Bold and The Beautiful stars get a full month off, while Days Of Our Lives stars get a three-week vacation from filming. Nonetheless, whether they have a vacation or not, all of these cast members are expected to return to the studio to work.
What About The Writer’s Strike?
Perhaps the soapiest of the daytime soaps strike stories have to do with the writers. Currently, there is a writer’s strike. But, those writers who do not agree to join the WGA strike are considered fi-core. The fi-core and non-member writers are currently in charge of writing the content that the actors are performing.
Therefore, when the WGA does resolve their strike, those writers will return to work and have to continue the storylines started by the fi-core and non-members. That could certainly offer some opportunity to really take a character’s arc off course!
Perhaps soap fans could see some unexpected story changes in the next few months.
