New details about who may be replacing Justin Roiland as the voice of Rick and Morty have emerged.
One of the biggest questions on the minds of Rick and Morty fans in 2023 is who will replace Justin Roiland. Roiland’s departure from the show was a major recent drama and a shock to the community for the dark comedy sci-fi cartoon. His domestic battery charge effectively ended his career and left the R&M crew to pick up the pieces. So what will become of the two iconic titular characters that Roiland was the voice of?
The New Voice Of Rick And Morty?
A recent interview with Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen and series executive producer Steve Levy sheds light on the search for Roiland’s replacement. The two spoke with Premiere during a 10th-anniversary celebration for the hit show.
A big question is whether or not Justin Roiland’s replacement will be one person doing both voices or two people, one to do each voice. In response to this question, Steve Levy says they’re, “still in the recruitment process.” So the search for the new grandpa-grandson space duo is still ongoing. Yet, both Levy and Ouweleen seem hopeful for the success of the eventual replacement. Ouweleen compares it to the many voice actors for Bugs Bunny over the decades.
“There have been several great Bugs Bunny voice actors,” Michael Ouweleen tells Premiere. “And I love what Jeff Bennett has done with them. But it’s not Mel Blanc! And yet we recognize the character. I even think that for Rick and Morty we will do even better… It will be fine. It’ll be great.”
There are several great impersonating voices for Rick and Morty that can be found across the internet. Some of them are so accurate that it would be hard to tell the difference between the impersonator and Roiland himself. If someone like that is cast to play the titular roles, it’s unlikely too many fans will put up a fuss for long. Especially if the writing for the show continues to be equally funny and insightful as in the past.
Season 7 And Beyond
Levy and Ouweleen also confirm in the interview that Season 7 should be arriving sometime this year. They say they’re planning on keeping the dates consistent with the last season’s release. So that may be a soft confirmation that Season 7 will premiere in September, or at least around this fall. The two also confirmed that work on both Season 8 and 9 has already begun. So it seems as though the crew is working harder than ever in the absence of Justin Roiland. That effort is pretty impressive, considering it wasn’t long ago that fans were anxiously awaiting the long gap between Seasons 2 and 3 of the show.
Rick and Morty Season 7 and Rick and Morty: The Anime are both coming sometime in 2023.
